For the most part they're pretty shitty because they're trying to make their money on volume and don't really want to spend more than 15 minutes with you.
Family doctors are always better to go see because they know you and the continuity of care is always there. Walk-in docs don't know shit about you if you've never been there before, so they're basically feeling their way through the dark whenever you go in for a visit. It's really shitty that the government doesn't make going into family medicine more lucrative for doctors. Most meds students scoff at going into family practice because they'd never make enough money to pay back their loans within 20 years. I think it takes the average doctors well into their 40 to pay back the debt from their educations. My old psychiatrist used to be a family doctor, but switched into psychiatry because the pay was shit--which it is when you consider that the average med student leaves school with almost 100k in debt and don't start making a full doctor's salary until they finish their residencies. Here's a link for the pay stats in BC. http://www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca/...statement.html Anyways, i think the system is fucked. I'm glad that we'll soon be able to see Nurse Practitioners for most of the stuff GPs usually take care of. ps. carepoint is on the verge of going under i think. |

Cheryl: what was the problem with the walk-in clinic doctors? were they assholes, or did you just find them incompetent? --Joanne :P |

I go to clinics. My family doctor always brushes me off. I had a fracture in my foot, and he told me it was nothing. The doctor from the clinic sent me to get xrays right away. BANG a fracture. I go to a walk in clinic in walnut grove and the doctors always make me feel like im being taken care of. I like that. =D

I saw a doc at a walk-in clinic & he did a good job but he didn't want to deal with more than 1 or 2 issues, presumably he wanted me to come back for extra visits. Like I had a couple of questions written down so as to not waste his time and get the most out of the visit, you hear so much in the media about how they're overworked. Well I'm not so sure about that.
I've got a friend with asthma and he know everything about asthma, more than the doctor maybe, and he gets really annoyed when they force him to come back to see the doctor every time he needs a simple prescription refill - obviously a cash grab. |

Walk in Clinic doctors have regular practices. They all go in on a circuit and work one or two days a week at a walk in. They don't see they're regular patiences there, so they don't have that rapport. I understand this, the thing I hate is all the weirdo's in the waiting room! >=]

i had the bestestestest walk in clinic doc in the whole wide world, but he went east to take some workshops or something. i miss him a lot..i ask about him every time i go to the docs. he was more than a doctor.. he was like a friend who earned my trust and actually sat down and listened to my problems, without just shoving me anti-biotics. i had a few tears trickle down my cheek when i found out he was leaving. dr. morris...bestest doc in the world.

but the thing is, I can understand that medicine is a ridiculously huge field and I don't expect doctors to know everything. but what peeves me off a lot is when a doctor doesn't make a point in trying to find good answers for you, or at least referring you to resources that CAN help you! heh, when I got rear-ended a couple of years ago, I went in to see a walk-in clinic doctor to get a referral for a chiropractor. all I fucking wanted was a referral, and she starts lecturing me about not braking too hard, as if I didn't feel bad enough about the whole situation :P --Joanne :P edit: if anyone knows of a good GP in the south vancouver area, please let me know! |

i had to go to a walk in clinic a while ago and the one thing i noticed was the "medical assistant" (cough, receptionist) was a fucking BITCH. the doctor was ok..
but there was some lady obviously in major pain from some kind of stomach problem or maybe urinary tract infection, just sitting silently on a chair, tears running down her face and she was holding her tummy tight and just rocking back and forth. the wait was so fucking long, she finally got up, ran for the door, yelped and fell over, and the receptionist bitch did NOTHING. one of the patients waiting to see the doctor had to get up and grab the lady a drink of water, maybe the receptionist should have asked her if she needed an ambulance or something. fuck walk ins. |

geez people... having the title of a "walk-in" clinic doctor is something that I don't believe should really equate with poor clinical decision-making skills. there are good doctors and bad doctors and you can find them in both walk-in clinics AND family practices!! --Joanne :P |
