Trees.
You know, in my line of work, and particularly on the site we're currently working on, you have to cut down a fair number of trees. Small ones usually, or at least small enough that you can take them down with a machete.. nothing much bigger than 3-4 inches.
You might think that you can just hack away without any worry of retaliation.. but... the trees are watching, and they will pick their moment! That moment came today at around 10:30am.. my coworker came back to where I was set up with the instrument, after cutting out a line where were had just managed to sneak through some trees on a particular angle that we wanted. I made some comment about how we were just going to be able to pull it off, and he responds: "Well Dave, sometimes you get lucky" I swear to god, not more than a beat passed before the 6 inch alder he had just sunk his machete into started to emit the familiar cracking sound that can only mean one thing: It's coming down! He realizes what's going on and scrambles out of the way.. fortunately it's coming down pretty slow and he has time to do so. UNfortunately, the fucking thing starts falling between a couple of other trees, causing the trunk to snap off and start twisting towards us. When it first started to go, my main concern had been for my coworker and our instrument, which I pulled out of the ground in an effort to safe guard it. Little did I know I was going to have the base of it plow over my coworker and swing horizontally straight for me and the instrument I was now holding.. Between the instrument and my head, I think we shared the blow 50/50.. knocked me over another log to land on some thankfully soft ground. So much for getting lucky! I ended up with a decent enough lump on my head that I had to head to a clinic, and then home. If things weren't dumb enough already, while I was in the doctor's room waiting, a goddamn fire alarm went off. I got checked out, I'm ok, I'm at home now with Tylenol and beer. I guess that's the end of the story! Assuming I don't die in my sleep, which apparently is enough of a possibility that my doctor recommended someone wake me up at 3am. :-o WCB here I come!

The Trees are always watching... Carry a Chainsaw, maybe you can use intimidation instead of a whimpy Machete. :p
