no fun
I pull at least 50 hours a week during the winter and upwards of 65 in the summer
I love the work I do but the lack of sleep starts to kill me two weeks into each new season and then my body adjusts and then Im ok...(just as long as I get my coffee )
Work is meant to be like that
thats why we get paid for it :P

hey, at least you're not expected to work two, 7am-7pm shifts, and two 7pm-7am back to back, and still be physically and mentally well enough to help save people's lives.

well, I suppose I shouldn't complain too much... residents have it worse...

actually, these shifts are what most fulll-time bedside nurses work. for this job, I'm buddied up with a full-time registered nurse and work all her hours.

but thank you for your comment :)

^as far as i know, the rules state you just need a minimum of 8 hours between shifts. any less than that and the second shift is all overtime.

i used to work a schedule like that with exactly 8 hours off between shifts. it was ass.

yeah, well it's harder when you're working a nightshift and trying to sleep during the day. see, your body produces a hormone called melatonin usually during the nighttime. one of melatonin's role is to induce sleepiness. when adjusting to a new schedule, you have to wait for your melatonin rhythm to shift, otherwise you stay feeling sleepy during the regular hours that you usually sleep at. but it's still hard, because again, melatonin is usually secreted during the nighttime and your circadian rhythms are more easily reset by bright light than just by actually doing something i.e working.

that's why you may find a lot of people who work regular night shifts say they never really ever get used to their schedule.

sleepiness isn't always as voluntary to most people as some may think. I, personally am not one of those people who can fall asleep with their hanging out the window of a moving car. but hey, props to those who are!
