i'm only adding to this thread because i was witness to both phone conversations as i met up w/ tony while i was out yesterday morning for dennys. tony was talking with someone else before he called you trying to figure out how the fuck he was going to break this news to you. he specifically said, "i don't want to be mean about it." after he got off the phone with you the first time, even i could tell that you were choked. then 5 or 10 min later you call back and start bitching tony out. it wasn't long til you both were yelling and he just ended it.

promotors hire djs for partys, no? i'd say yes, regardless if payment is even involved. putting together an event takes a coming together of people.
i can assure you 4play set tony back financially. and you are the only dj at the party that got paid.

unbelievable , but by now I'm used to it so I dont really care , I play my shit and leave

Flash Forward to today and I get a call out of the blue from Tony saying I'm not playing at his stage at Apex

I think the excuse was he had a friend who was bringing in lasers and wanted a time to play so they bumped me off. This call woke me up today so I wasnt in the sharpest state of mind.

I say ok but then I wake up and I can smell the bullshit

I call him back saying that I was already fucked around at 4play and that this is going to far

Turns out the fucker held a grudge for me saying I was going to leave the party and said that I had pissed off other dj's throughout the night

Maybe they were mad cause the timeslots were fucked up asshole? ever thought of that? you even claimed it was you're own fault

I'm the one who took all the shit from his mistake and he has the nerve to tell me that people were mad at me.

So I'm calling him out on this today over the phone and when I call him back he says "other dj's dont wanna play my stage because of you ... i dont wanna talk about it" and then proceeds to hang up on me.

So here I am on internet land .. showing you all how much of a tool Tony really is , because he wouldnt let me talk to him so I need to get this shit off my chest.

What I don't get is how he could be mad at me for wanting to cancel , I was ok with being bumped once , but twice is another story. He went from the apologetic promoter to blaming me today over the phone for his lack of organization and that really struck a chord in me and I wasn't going to let it slide.

I hope you have found this both entertaining and informative.

i give up on the vancouver scene , i don't care if this thread tarnishes my image here because i have bigger goals set forth than vancouver which as you mentioned involve writing music

it just really gets under my skin when someone acts one way in person and a completely different way behind your back

I still do think it was completely inappropriate for George to post this thread but you had to post this and make it completely worse.

First off, as a promoter you should really learn the importance of good pr.

Secondly, don't treat your DJ'S like shit and talk to them like this. Don't you understand that people are paying money to go see the DJ'S at your show? No dj's, no party. Get it?

First off, I also think George should have kept this off the board as that rarely does anything but exacerbate the issue.

However, I do have an issue with this:

when did it become the norm for promoters to not pay their DJs? This isn't directed at Schif T, since i've played at enough parties and have enough dj friends to know that people rarely ever get paid at underground parties. In fact, I've seen and heard instances where promoters ask a DJ to play and then get all offended when the DJ gives his fee. It's to the point where it's almost expected that any local talent you book is going to play for free.

Now I've thrown events where I've lost a lot of money too, but would you walk into Long & McQuade with the sound rental gear and say "sorry, my event lost money and hey! it was local, so I'm not going to pay you for your gear"? It seems like a lot of parties are not budgeted with paying djs at all nowadays which is kind of disappointing.

The grand majority of DJs in this city do not have a superstar attitude and the grand majority will probably even play for free *if it's discussed beforehand.* But it would be nice to get some compensation for playing even if it's a couple free drinks and cab fare/gas money or even just enough to cover a couple of the records i bought last week.

Hell even the gesture is appreciated - I've played at parties fully expecting to not get paid due to poor turnout and the promoters gave me all of $20 anyway and it made my night

its like a few years back every dj who played and was a vet was getting $100+ for any gig

its such a drastic change from the scene now , and i'm not used to it cause i'm not playing out all that often anymore and i'm comparing my expectations to what they were than

that being said i will also address harp's comment

i never said i don't like playing out in vancouver , i simply said i have given up on the vancouver scene for raves , i'm still very satisfied with the local club scene , but as far as raves go there are soo many newb dj's who want there turn on the decks that they will play for free

this in turn has caused vetran dj's to take a pay cut as a promoter can always higher a newb for the show and save money

most promoters into raves in van have taken this route

but remember , without your workhorse (aka the dj) all you are is a good idea , and i'm still under the firm belief that the workhorse deserves to get paid

and a little fyi , im not a little money grubber i was going to play apex for nothing but the fun of it

regardless this thread is going nowhere and i should have expected that , me and tony will probobly just settle our differences over a beer at the lotus

i think i just wanted to get my feet wet with a little web drama as its been some time
