I've come to the conclusion its not just friends in a relationship.. but also friends that are seeing each other or what not.

I never know whether to call myself a third wheel or a fifth wheel. Technically, you're the third person (unless you're hanging with 2 couples), so third wheel seems logical.. but in the sense of the analogy, 2 wheels is a standard, but 3 wheeled vehicles exist, whereas I don't know of many, if any, 5 wheel transports... which kind of firms up the analogy.
