Dj's, your opinion - fading out the previous djs last track.

I think, it all depends on the genre..

But what's your opinion, is it rude? Disrespectful?

I don't think so, I simply might not want to mix out of your tune.. I might start with something completly different that wouldn't mix in anyways. Is it wrong then?

Like I can see for instance with house, as long as the two tunes are relativly the same bpm, then there's no reason to fade out, but it's different with d&b, different bpms, sounds, specials, intros, etc.

The only thing I wouldn't do is fade it out 16 bars in, got to at least wait until after the last drop (in d&b anyways)..

Any thoughts?

rather than fade out the previous track, maybe just let it play till its pretty much done that do a quick cut to your first track.

or let it finish than start your first track?

If its that dj's last song he chose, chances are he/she really wanted the crowd to hear it. So maybe some djs would find it a little rude.

let it play until the track is on the lead-out anyway, then fade it down and shout "GIVE IT UP FOR DJ WHATEVER!! WHOOOOOOOO!".

at least, for party music. if it's not party music nobody cares when there's a new DJ anyway.

Exactly!

I totally agree, I'll mix in if it'll go nicely, but when it's switching up tempo's/styles just let their track have it's way with the dancefloor then do what you gotta do.

if you're going to fade/cut/slow down the last DJs track, at least let it play to the 2nd drop

Agreed with Matty and soo.

You could also use the power-down effect or vinyl brake effect on a CDJ somewhere close to the ending of the last track.

Theres lots of tricks you can do to go from the previous DJs last track into your first one if you are not able to do a straight mix.
But being creative and not just killing the track is always better IMO.

thats only respectful, i would always mix out of it, why wouldn't you keep the crowd moving? I guess if you need to build it up and get a crowd together then I would end the last record tastefully cold and start out on a different jive.

I miss the days when parties had a line up of everything and not just one style.

I think the dj that's coming on should at least say something to the dj that's playing their last track. I've had dj's just come on and cut off my track completly, and I think that is completly disrespectful.

I hate when that happens, some Dj's are just pure ego, they couldn't care less what you're playing, they just want to get on the decks. The problem is that most Dj's play better after a couple drinks and then they start thinking they're all superstars and shit. In actuality, the crowd really has no choice what the Dj's going to play, they're just hoping it's good music.
Personally, I like to mix from at least the middle of the track; Anyone who mixes before this point is wiping their feet on the DJ before them.
There is 1 exception to the rule: If you hate the DJ who played before you and so do all your friends and it's just "thank God they're done," then by all means, shut it down.

even from crowd perspecitive.. theres nothing more annoying than going off to the the last track a dj puts on only to have it cut off half way thru because of the new dj coming on... I HATE THAT!! i think its pretty disrespectful to the dj as well...

Word

I was opening in denver for a DJ i IDOLIZED since before I even started DJ'ing (not Tiesto, so don't start e-mailing) and I said "let it play out" and no more than 30 seconds later, he just killed it and started playing some hideous tribal song. I just gave him a thumbs-up and said "classy!" (tone dripping with sarcasm).

if its a different style i try and start with a track with a long intro - no drumbeat - and try to fade it in as smoothly as i can.

What pisses me off is a when the guy playing before you decides to end his set with a ten minute epic that he insists you let play all the way through. At the end of the day if he wanted that track played he should have put it on in his own timeslot - what you do in yours is up to you.

Obviously if he's into your time then it's fair game. I almost always mix in my last track with 7 mins to go to give it time to play out.

Personally, if Im playing a diff genre then the DJ before me and dont wanna mix into it Ill ask if they wanna do a powerdown or something..... fading out is kinda boring, you gotta get crafty with that stuff!

way more fun to just fucking hit the power button and blatantly let everyone know that it's your turn now.

when im mixing in trance, sometimes if there's ambient in the end of my previous track, i'll let it go with the breakdown into the second track. Sounds great.

^ agree

I was playing an extended timeslot a while back and being the nice guy that I am I offered the next guy up my last 15 mins... I put on my last track and went to boogie for a minute or two and he started scratching over it and cut right to hip hop before the FIRST breakdown...

what happened to dj etiquette?!?

fuck letting the track play out until the end. most dj's put their last tune on 2 minutes before my set, and i'm not about to let an 8 min tune play out. i usually mix out of the previous dj's set (if in town) but if i'm out of town i fade out just to make sure everyone knows he or she is done. it's not rude as long as you aren't doing it in the first 2 min's of a song.
