Production: How to create crowd vocals?

Anyone have any tips on how to make a vocal/loop sound like a crowd is 'chanting' or yelling it out?

Or is this only done by actually recording a crowd?

You could probably overdub one voice over and over with different variations on the voice's pitch, tone, timbre, etc.

probly, but then you need to be at an event in which the crowd is yelling and no other music is being played

sample sample sample. reggae clashes/concerts, whatever recordings you can find. usually I layer a few different ones together and fade in and out with a lot of reverb.
