If Plaza's sound is amazing with a live band, it should be just as or even more so with digital sound. As much as I love Bassnectar, it's obvious he flailed on this one.

lorin seems far to experienced in the booth and in the studio to be ignorant of mixer gains and the effect they can have on the chain.

Also anyone who really digs music,engineering,audio,live music,gose out often ect, KNOWS or have heard others remark that the plaza is one of the better sounding rooms in the city.Lorin would of heard something like that from other people or just in general.

or i guess lorin just flailed LOL...eaither way, cant really blame the plaza sound system.

For most of the night the sound was on point.

BUT...

You're only as good as the person mixing you.

There was extra sound brought in for the show and an auxillary mixing board set to the side of the stage being manned by one of the above mentioned people.

I'll stand behind our system being one of the best in the city, but like I said before, if you've got some mook mixing for you, you're only going to sound as good as that.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems fucked up to have a second person on a second board handling your sound. Unless that person has telepathy and knows what you are trying to accomplish with your levels. The thought would never have even crossed my mind.

chad what do you mean?....what you described is the basic talent/foh mixer relationship that nearly all live sound is based on.

you cant be playing your guitar and mixing your own show at the same time can you?

true but thats a completely different mixer, on the real big systems its a bit different.

in terms of live sound re-enforcement the dj mixer is used as a creative tool to blend and mix the djs records together in a pleasing and cohearent manner and to allow the dj to 'perform' his mix

depending on the type of system, its CRITICAL that the output from the dj mixer that passes through the house comps,limiters,mains are properly balanced,set and for the most part left alone.

If you have a bit of a wonk on the FOH mixer and limiters wich is the vital stage of the chain then that destroys all hope of decent sound and there is nothing that the source(dj,musician) can do about it...

it would seem that this is what happend to lorin.

it's not like lorin bassnectar has ever been known for his prowess behind the decks. I suppose he uses ableton now but his track record isn't the best. I've sat in or near the booth for a lot of these big name, touring, international, "experienced" djs and seen many a mixer peaking out in the red.

Just a comment on the sound -

The bass sounded like complete ass before lorin even came on. It started in the last few tracks of the previous dj's set and carried on for the first chunk of lorins set. Some tweaking must have gone on part way through because it definitely improved. It wasnt the plaza sound that I'm used to, but the fart-bass effect was definitely reduced.

If someone is at a sold out show twirling a hoola hoop around hitting people in the head repetedly then I wouldn't feel bad about the police taking them away on principle alone.
