if winamp can read mp4's which i think it can then just goto preferences/plugins/output change it to disk writer...thatll make it into a wav file then you can just convert it..or you can set it up to convert right into mp3 when it writes it

might want to get rid of any other files in the playlist and make sure it isnt on repeat

If winamp can play .m4a, it can _decode_ them into .wav just by changing the output plugin to a file.

Once it's a wav file use an encoder to convert to whatever you want.

NOTE: Re-encoding to different codecs from other codecs WILL reduce sound quality, unless you then encode to some lossless codec. As a result, a direct rip from the CD will warrant much better results.

You don't need to encode them to m4a if you're trying to convert to mp3. You merely need decode the m4a file and then get some mp3 encoder (*coughLAMEcough*) to convert to mp3.
