whats a good vst for creating that sense of hearing something from a long distance?

I'd say FM-7... It's just like a DX-7. Perfect for Ambient like sounds.

you can only get so much out of reverb though... I'm trying to combine both reverb and a specific width adding vst to make that ultra space signals sound...

I would say, if you want space in your sounds, start with a sound as close to the original idea. If you have a dry sound revebs like the R1 from waves, can re-create real spaces. This is probably the most realistic reverb out there. But if you want depth without reverb and the muddyness, layer another sound using the same sequencing as the first but place it in the background.
