Linking Computers for Music Production

I'm about to build a second computer; has anyone successfully used 1 computer for VST's, samples, plug-ins, and the other for running the sequencer? Can you cross platform? (run Windows for the sample, plug-in system, and Apple for sequencing)
I don't know all the in's and outs of linking computers. I've had a second computer for storage, networked for file swapping, but never running together for music.

If you know some things to avoid, or suggestions about how to connect them, please post here!
