Peeps with Serato (and those w/Mac & PC knowledge)
Okay... to all of those with Serato and that have some Mac & PC knowledge.
I will be investing in Serato shortly (like a lot of people lately it seems) and as a result, will obviously be buying a laptop specifically for Serato and music management only. (So no, I'm not running Photoshop or any intensive app like that.) That said, I was looking at one of the new MacBooks which looks great and I've heard nothing but amazing things as far as stability. Now I also have access to a slightly discounted dual-core Intel/Windows based laptop with 2GB of memory, 80GB hard drive and all that good stuff. So... my question is would you go with the most likely more expensive MacBook which tends to be more stable or, go for the discounted PC/Windows-based dual core laptop and why? |

People report problems w/ macs and people report with pcs. Neither is more stable w/ scratchlive. As for music production in general I've always heard of apples being more stable so maybe thats a good route for you.
ps ask this question here. www.scratchlive.net theres been a few issues with the new intel macs but i beleive its a quick fix. And just for the record I have had a HP for the last 8 months. I can watch porn and play scratchlive at the same time with no probs. |

same answer as matty man .
of 20 djs i know w/ serato .. only 4 have macs -- and performance wise, its exactly the same .. only difference is MACS look way better.. (in my opinion at least) .. I myself am running a Toshiba Sattelite - no problems at all. I can say the same w/ every other dj friend of mine that uses serato. ASk hirshel .. he rocks it now too. I was gonna upgrade to a Mac if i found the PC's to be not as stable. . but not the case. . so Im 100% happy w/ my system. |

$2500 Behemoth
My roomate was gonna buy a fully loaded iBook until I dug this gem up for him. I personally have purchased 3 different acer notebooks and they're great. They're clearly not ast stylish as the Macs, and your support team ain't gonna be as stellar. but it's nearlly a GRAND less. plus check the specs: 20" Widescreen Definition Screen 2GB RAM 160GB HDD (it's got two SATA slots... TWO!) 2.0Ghz Dual Core Geforce go7600 512MB it's seriously the most retarded value I've seen in a laptop in ages... It ain't that long ago that ENTRY level laptops were $2500... The only issue I can see with the acer is that it may be slightly less portable than the Mac. Having said that think of how much easier that screen is gonna be to work with. it's fully 3" larger than the Mac. that's nearly the same difference between the 17" ProBook and the tiny little 13" iBooks. Plus... well... c'mon... it has a fucking TV tuner. |

Just a couple posts I came across yesterday while browsing on scrtchlive.
DjReact June 9, 2006, 1:49 PMquote PC are the fuckin worst with serato...i teach at the scratch academy here in NYC and alot of people i know are switching from dells to Macs...no mac i know of crashed yet DJDQ June 9, 2006, 2:11 PMquote DJReact, Scratch Academy, where? Just bought SSL... DJK June 9, 2006, 2:58 PMquote My mac crashed every 10 minutes, now I am a happy pc user. Don't talk shit just because you like somthing else. Everyone has there own opinion, and you should try respecting other peoples views, especially if you are gonna represent somthing like that. nik39 June 9, 2006, 3:00 PMquote To add: My friends SSL crashed a couple of times during his gigs. My SSL never ever crashed with an official SSL build. He is on a mac, I am on a PC. Does that mean PC are always better than Macs? No! Same goes for the opposite. DJUltimate June 9, 2006, 3:19 PMquote My Mac (iBook G4) crashed last night at a gig. That shit sucks! DJUltimate June 9, 2006, 3:20 PMquote Not that the Mac sucks, but having it crash on me at a gig sucks big time! Dj KaGeN June 9, 2006, 4:50 PMquote @DjReact... Care to take some time and look in the HELP section and give your fellow Mac users a hand??? See you promoting Mac, but you must be too busy to help those you lead down this road. Wow, looks like others have had issues right here in this thread. simply amazing. |

I started my own thread on Scratch Live and got some interesting replies...
The summary of it all: - If you are only using the laptop (Mac or PC) for Serato and music management, you should be fine. Keep regular back-ups of your music files, crate organization and ID3 tags coupled with a clean image of the OS and only critical aps. - If you're using a Windows-based system, disable whatever services you're not using. (Duh) - Use what you're most comfortable with so that IF something goes wrong, you can fix it quickly rather than stumbling around with hardware and an OS that you don't know how to troubleshoot. My decision: I'm going with the insane deal I'm getting on this Windows-based laptop. It's a dual core Intel laptop with 2GB of Dual Channel DDR2 shared memory and a 256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M TurboCacheT video card. Like I said, the only thing I'm using this particular laptop for is music management. So that in combination with an external USB hard drive (to create a mirror image of my music files in case of a total crash), and I'm in business. Done and done. |

I think I converted Christian Alvarez too. He didn't know that out of the box Serato comes with digitally encoded CD's which do the same as the records do. |

I would say definately go for the Mac. they are known as being way more stable than any pc. I am not biased because i run a pc and i cant stand it haha. I work with macs at school, and just love them. But unfortunately they are too expensive for me at the moment.
In the end you'll feel better about a mac, and it will prove u right. |

only 2 things i would consider if it was soley for music, is
1 Hard Drive speed needs to be pretty high as laptops sometimes have 5400rpm instead of 7600 so you can buffer those tracks without skippage. 2 Processing power will play a big part when your pitchbending tracks if serato does that in real time. Mac or Pc whichever they both have PC processors now but Mac still wins in power with partially 64bit OS. |

Digitally encoded CD's? I had no clue! Why did I have to read this... |

All other things being equal, with a mac laptop you can duel boot. With a PC laptop your stuck with Windows so it might be worth the extra money for the flexibility.
