Affiliations

Alot of Djs will have a little affiliation thing going on, and it seems like there are a zillion of different ....crews? posses? promotion companies?

Like when you see a flyer for a party and look at the lineup it's like:

DJ SweatBalls (condom crew/ stormyDrainz)

DJ Crankeypants (valium / std)

My question is, what the heck are these affiliations?

Not just what are they but why?

I've seen some listing car clubs as affils! WTF.

Affiliations are typically record labels you're signed to, promotion companies that you're a resident for, certain labels (like clothing lines) that sponsor you and ultimately club night or residences you also hold.

**edit...get out of the bedroom I guess. Kind of hard when you approach a club owner / promoter and they've already got DJ suckballsTop40 or DJ playsTheSameRecords lined up for the next year of openings.

technically, if you have no affils, you're a ronin, not a shogun.

to start: band up with a few of your fellow DJs and start throwing events. between the bunch of you, choose a name for your crew. the crew name is now your affiliation.

if you have to ask, you don't need to worry about affils yet.

Ahhhh. Ronin. I like that title even better. And thanks for the tips...oddly enough, none of my friends DJ, and are mostly into punk/metal and don't care to go out of their way to get to these secret parties.

I like your style though, think I had better start throwing my own events. Suppose I should start saving up for some Mackies...

go to nights that have similar music to your styles. Meet people. Hand out demos and cds. Befriend the promoters (this helps a lot).

If you don't like schmoozing that much your best bet is start your own night.
