The whole song is ambiguous. However, the underlying theme tends to suggest that they are talking about a relationship. Love is never mentioned, but big fish could mean love.
That would mean, that the big, delicious (haha) fish that got a way could be a girl you loved. I think the point is that they were trying to explain that you should be happy in your relationships, because you might end up on the wrong side of the fishing pole someday (hahaha)
