Wait

Definitely, wait.

Blu-ray, yo: tomorrow's DVD. The biggest difference is that it uses a blue/violet Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiationrather than a red LASER.They're supposed to start integrating this new technology in NA at the beginning of 2006. They're available now in JPN.

Blu-Ray DVDs hold 27 GB/layer, eventually getting up to around 200 GB per DVD with new multi-layering techniques. A double-layer blu-ray would give you almost six times as much capacity as a current DVD. A 1x rotation gives 36 Mbps and they promise 8x – 12x (~400Mbps) will be available quite early on.

Ahh...blu-ray...

Don't let the man fool you: The price is not dropping because faster writers are coming out and you aren't getting a good deal.

Blu-ray is an entirely new technology (which, incidentally, is designed to accomodate HDTV) and it's absolutely absurd to buy anything now. Save up; I doubt blu-ray will come cheap.

enjoy waiting till the beginning of 2006 for the brand new bluray burner and spending more on a dvd player for your tv that actually supports the new technology

otherwise, buy the 16x dvd burner now. there's ALWAYS going to be newer technology/speeds coming out but what matters is what suits your needs right now

How long did it take you to buy a DVD player after they first came out? They continue to make & ppl continue to buy VCRs b/c many still have working camcorders & b/c Blockbuster still rents videocassettes. If you just bought a DVD writer, there's no incentive to consider upgrading (even long after blu-ray comes out) b/c you'll be able to get by with what you've got for a few more years. But, blu-ray writers are backwards-compatible: They can also burn old DVDs (& even CDs). And, you won't need to buy a another writer (in addition to a new player, TV, etc) when everyone & everything has moved on.

If you wait a few months for blu-ray you'll be ready to convert your whole setup whenever the time comes and you'll always have the ability to keep using the old stuff.

If you really need a DVD writer now, go for the cheapest one available. In a year, blu-ray won't be as common as normal DVD technology, but no major retailers will be devoting any of their attention to the antiquated technology that you're still using. Then, you'll either be one of the people who've got something that works for both new & old, or you'll be one of the dinosaurs who still rent videotapes.

still skeptical. the technology seems great, and ideally when bluray comes out there will be a lot of support put out for it (ie. dvd players, movies, etc). however this probably wont be the case, and lets not forget the high pricing on such units.

just look at hdtv. the technology came out a LONG time ago and only now are more and more channels starting to support it. back when it came out, what was the use of buying the hdtv if you werent able to fully utilize it?

Just b/c it was probably 2 years before I watched a single HD broadcast on my HDTV doesn't mean we should've waited for the price to drop to a mere fraction of what we paid back then.

You see, now, I can watch CSI w/ black bars on the top & bottom once a week just by telling Shaw that I'm HD-ready-&-willing to pay gauge–level premiums for nothing more than the ability to see that television stars are a hell of a lot uglier than my old TV let on (their skin just dunna look so perfect when you can see every freckle, mild discoloration and disfigurement that normal, non-TV ppl have).

PLUS, I've been totally comfortable pissing away the entirety of the last 2 years since I've known that even if I do fuck-all, I'll still be able to bask in the tranquil, yet vivid, glow that is high–def... ... well, at least until 30,000 hrs when the phosphors in my plasma burnout & the whole TV subsequently craps out...

Yes, I'm quite sure this was the right way to go.

I got one of those LG 16X DL burners about 6 months ago, works great for DVD backups and music, data backups, no complaints, also CD-R. My drive came with a low-end Nero package which works very well.

I'd say go for it, buy the current drive type and get busy burning discs!

I haven't used the DL disks yet.

I mostly use DVD+R as they seem good for both movies and data backup and they are a smarter media than DVD-R (something called "booktype" is used with +R but not -R if I remember right and this makes DVD+R better).

Only problem I've had is using DVD+RW disks - these are rewritable just like a diskette - I wanna use them to backup various files occasionally and save the cost of new discs. Possible software glitch, or bad DVD+RW discs (4X Mitsumi), not sure yet.

1) what's the burn speed for dual layer?
2) how long does it usually take to burn a full one layer disc

thanks

By the time everyone else has moved on, your 2006 Bluray drive will probably have crapped out on you anyways, considering the quality of most computer components these days.

On the LG box it says the drive can burn DL at 4X, I may try a test DL burn soon as the DL disc prices have dropped a lot.

A 1 layer disc DVD+-R will burn as fast as aprox 10 minutes at 8X. I haven't yet bought any 16X discs.

Most recent commercial movie DVDs are DL but can be backed up with good quality onto 1-L discs by doing some compression and omitting stuff like Spanish audio. Compression takes a fair bit of computer time (about an hour) which would probably not be required if you had a DL disk to burn onto.

I haven't found any difference in quality of DVD discs yet, but I like Fuji and sometimes the price is same as no-name. I had a problem with Mitsumi DVD+RW discs but I've read they make good stuff so who knows?

Well, yeah, of course!—that's what the warranty is for. . . In fact, of the countless number of computers & computer accessories my family & I have purchased over the past 2 decades, I'm pretty sure we made use of the extended warranty for each & every single one of 'em. You'd have to be insane not to get a warranty for something so expensive, delicate, complicated, precise & useful!

INTERESTING SIDENOTE: At le Futur Shoppe, the warranty is 50% commission (correct me if I'm wrong, Dave) BUT—at the same time—the warranty also makes them more money than any of their consumer products. It's clearly the biggest and greatest scam of all time, but how can this be? I mean, everything electronic breaks (at least everything I've ever had). And, even when you're the one who broke it, they'll eventually fix it for you if don't give in . . . sometimes you've just got to be willing to fight over it for a couple months.

My sister's dog chewed up her laptop; the screen, the motherboard—all of it was completely fucked. She said that it wasn't like that when we brought it in so we wouldn't pay for it . . . yada-yada-yada . . . they ended up buying her a brand new, better laptop a mere 6 months later just b/c we wouldn't take "For God's Sake, your bloody warranty doesn't cover this!" for an answer. :274:

Future shop does get a comission on warranty's, when i bought my laptop from them i got pushed hardcore for a warranty, i eventually just bullshitted the guy by saying i didn't have enough money because he brought it up about 10 times in a span of 20 minutes:093:

Personaly i'd buy a dvd writer right now, blue ray may not even be the most used format in the future(higher prices on media) dvd hd is also coming out and the two standards have several key players backing them. So blue ray may be abadoned in a year or two, even if its the better standard(VHS vs BETA).

sinnerman, please increase font size and stop hyping up future products, we know theyre going to be better than what is out now, but something like a dvd burner will not become obselete as fast as your imagining

buy your burner dood, you'll enjoy it.
