I wrote the book on getting ripped off by people. I learned my lesson. I think it is foolish for people to do this. |

well even if they want to know what are they gonna do? if they dont have an address then their search is gonna be pretty difficult.....almost impossible......so i think most ppl have no problem taking those chances to share their setups with fellow DJs.

we've got some tech's & a rane scratch mixer. plus a shitty old stereo system. can't wait for the living room reno's to be finished so the upgrades can start again.
oh yeah, i've got a couple vestax pdx-2000's in mint condition that i'm thinking about selling. |

I disagree. I dont think many people stealing on this scale would continue to break into a place if they heard an intimidating dog on the other side of the door.....any thief smart enough to pinpoint the location of a persons dj gear and where its kept through an internet message board will LIKELY be smart enough to know whats on the other side of the door weather it be house occupant with a bat, a big dog, or nothing at all.

And yes, I have had someone study where I lived, what my schedule was, and break into my place. Oh and for the record, the place had a big dog. |

I too have had people watch my house, determine my schedule, and break in.
in fact, they knew well enough that I wouldn't be home that they took the time to smoke crack in my bedroom, have a shower, and steal a new set of my clothes to wear out. (wtf?!) strangely, the only other things they stole were things they could pawn to get more crack. they got food from my kitchen and ate it in my studio, leaving the garbage there among the synths and drum machines, but all they ended up taking was a little bit of cash, some jewelry and a work-owned laptop. still, I don't post my address on the net, I do have a monitored alarm system that I turn on even if I'm just going out for two minutes, and since I work from home, I'm home about 99% of the time anyway. :) seriously tho, decks and gear and such are an awful lot of trouble to steal for not that much profit. The pawn value on a PS3 or Nintendo Wii would be way higher than on a mixer, and way harder to trace... the only kind of folks that'd plot to break into your home and steal your decks and mixer would have to be sketchy methheads with aspirations of DJing themselves. I see the rule not so much being "don't post pictures of your setup" as "don't let jibheads find out where you live". there's lots of pics of my setup on my website, http://mux.ca |

Some of the gear that I have and use with love I learned about in a thread like this in the first place. Just as much as some tracks I have and play with love I hae learned about in a "post your favorite track" thread. It's ok, you don't have to participate. Last edited by MatSM; Feb 20, 07 at 10:06 PM. I know its hard to believe how some random stranger could figure out your address from a post on the internet. But think how easy identify theft is. Not to mention that if anyone was to steel your stuff it would most likely be someone you know or someone who has met you off fnk because this site is such a local community site. It's not hard to get an idea of where someone lives if your an acquaintance or a friend of a friend of a friend. As soon as they find out what expensive equipment you own... you become an easy target.
Your naive to think that breaking into a house is not worth a couple of g's. Maybe not to you, but to a thief breaking a car window is even worth a couple of cents. Last edited by Ree Fresh; Feb 20, 07 at 10:50 PM. |

now, think how much easier it is to use the internet to find people who have PS3's. hell, I bet with a half-hour of google work you could make a shopping list. now, more logic: someone has spent $2000 or so on a set of turntables - that means they probably also have a vinyl addiction, which means they probably don't really have that much disposable income to waste on more easily-pawnable stuff like XBoxes, DVDs, computers and generic home stereo equipment. Compare that to the list of folks with PS3's or XBox 360's, and the "internet targets" become a *lot* more apparent. even more logic: someone from across town sees your setup, and thinks "man, I could steal that!". by the time they've crossed town five times to figure out your schedule and when you'll be home, they could have stolen ten xbox360's and already sold them all. this is getting silly - the logic just doesn't stack up. posting pics of your turntables on the internet is no more making you a target of a break-in than posting a picture of your dog is making you a target of a dognapping, or posting your own picture is making you a target of a personal attack. by the logic that pictures on the internet invite crime, you'd think myspace would be causing a billion percent increase in stalking. god, I hate post-911. |

Fact is that ppl HAVE had their homes broken into and HAVE had their gear/equipment/computers/records stolen. In most cases its often someone that already knows them and knows they have that kind of gear in their home. Its not rare for theifs to take things that have very little or no value. Not to mention a lot of theifs arent the brightest and probably dont think the logic that you have. My car has a mobilizer which makes it near impossible to steal, but I still put on my club and make sure I don't have anything that looks like stealing visible in my car. It may seem like im a little paranoid, but maybe that little extra caution saved me a few broken windows and car damage. I dont mean to sound like your mom telling you what or what you cant do, but its just something to think about. |

Plus, these days, it's a lot harder to get rid of turntables than it was even five years ago. All the pawnshops are registered with the RCMP now, and anything that goes in is checked against a database of reported-stolen stuff - everyone's got all their serial numbers written down somewhere safe, RIGHT? still. don't post your address on the internet, and renter's insurance, good doors/locks, and a security system go a long way. so does making your shit easy to identify, marking it permanently, etc. |
