Ableton users.
I switched computers and was curious... before I reinstall 5.0.3, how is the newest version (7.0.2?) holding up? Will I have to do some serious learning to get the hang of the new version?
Also, is Logic Pro 8 really as difficult as I'm told it is? |

I'm still using 6, so I wouldn't know. I've always been an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda guy.
However, if you're going to buy new software, you simply can't beat Logic 8. They've made the interface a lot easier to get around on and balooned the content. You get 50g gigs for $500, all the garage band jam packs, pretty much everything Apple makes. |

This statement is correct up until "bootlegs", from that point on it gets a serious fail.

on the assumption that you are "trying before buying", when I installed live7 in windows vista most of the samples we're MIA.
I don't really use the program so haven't bothered fixing the problem, but it might be best to go with 6 and then try and install 7 on top of it? ha ha let me know how it works.. |

I work at a music store. PCs are for hobbyists. ProTools doesn't work for sh!t on them, and they always have crazy issues (all those viruses sure help). Macs are plug and play (as long as you turn automatic updates off). There's a reason Macs cost twice as much, and you won't know what it is till you own one. This is coming from a man who used only PCs from green-screen DOS till a year and a half ago. I can't go back. Plus, I can still use Soulseek, 'cause I have parallels. I can run windows as a plug in, and more effectively than PCs. A big part of the problem comes down to PC popularity, All the banks use PCs, so they can't rewrite their OS code. They're a slave to decade old code, which leaves them open to a host of problems I'm sure you're aware of. It's not really their fault, but that's the way it is.

Phrenetic: Macs aren't exactly fisher price, they just have a very specific interface. For many multimedia producers this is sometimes preferable, hence why macs are so big in the professional production scene. That being said, however, just about any major software that you can get your hands on for mac to do with production there's a windows port for as well, so there's not really anything saying you can't use PCs professionally.
Norman Cook used an Atari ST up until his last album, where he used ProTools (thanks Wikipedia). |

i just think its halarious when mac user's descriptions of their pc experience always sound like one of those cheesy spice rack infomercials. ... you know the one's where they open the cupboard and they loose an eye because of a bottle of thyme jumped at their face. BUT THAT WOuLDNT HAVE HAPPENED WITH THIS EASY-TO-USE SPICE RACK FOR JUST 4 EASY PAYMENTS OF 9.99$ !!!! |

Well they just got internal sidechaining, finaly!!!!!
I havn't used cubase that much, but I have found it (sonar) works more like "windows" program. You right click in an audio channel to add plugins. I don't think you can have plugin chains preset, like in logic. The automation is dead easy. Act works pretty good, but certain controllers are more compatible with ACT (i think it stands for Active Controll Technology) basicly it auto maps your controller to softsynths, fx. Most the time I have it turned off, I usualy manualy set up the filter to CC74 on my synths. I've been using Sonar since version 2, so I'm really used to it by now, even though it took a while to get ultra competitive with all the other sequencers, it's awsome now. The time stretching, and audio manipulation is really strong. I still wanna get logic though, so many peeps in the industry use it. It just seems more intuitive (by two features), and Macs just have more power availible., even though the newest os only reads 4 gigs of ram, you can stick up to 32 gigs in the new Mac Pros, that would be nuts, you would never have to bounce audio out if you wanted to. Always keeping everythinng tweakible until your final bounce. PS I'm just Upgrading tonight to 7 I'll give a proper review in a bit. |

New version of Abelton rocks....I use it with Logic 7 all the time.
Logic is intimidating at first, but imho, its the be all of end all as far as production programs...you can get as complex or as simple as you want....if you need some pointers getting started with Logic, feel free to shoot me a PM. =) -Tristan |

I haven't found that many people who have seriously used both (checking your email on your friend's comp doesn't count) side exclusively with the PC. I have a mac and a PC. I do recordings on both of them. I prefer to use a mac though. PC's a blast for other things however. |
