Making re-edits

I want to start making my own re edits and blends. Simple things like adding an extra few bars to a jam, a scratch sound before the first beat or adding some drums to an older jam. Making things a bit more dj friendly.

I have cubase. I have a pc. I have mp3s.

I have not had any experience w/ anything production related and rly have no idea where to start.

Whats your advice?

get ableton or acid - a little easier to work with in terms of easy mashups and edits. Cubase would work (and would likely sound better) but it's pretty complicated for simple edits.

oh yea, some advice for making the edits - I highly suggest using wavs or aif's for your edits. If you use mp3s, you'll basically be re-encoding the tracks as another mp3 (unless you keep it as a wav) and are essentially compressing it twice.

in addition to what soo said - since you've got Cubase, i'd recommend slaving Ableton to Cubase with Rewire to do your mixdowns. Mixdowns on Ableton sound a lot like ass.

Unless you're just cutting & splicing on one track of audio, but if that's the case i'd just use something like Soundforge or Cool Edit.

I would not recommed trying to do edits in Cubase, it's possible but very clumsy compared to Ableton.

also- i've done lots of mashes & edits using 320kbps mp3s and i haven't noticed any loss of quality upon re-encoding them. I wouldn't try it with anything lower than that, tho.

Ableton saves out at wav/aiff, just burn from there.

the thing that sounds like ass in ableton is when you dont warp and/or transpose correctly. I make mashups all the time.

^ actually - the mixdown algorithm is just pretty sub-par in general. over-warping will just make it even worse.

Doesn't mean that you can't learn anything by trying something new.

ableton just doesn't mix down well imo, even in hi-q mode. i love its editing capabilities, rewired w/ cubase it's extremely useful.

dont asume that I have not tried some other DAW's Rewire or not, none of them are as stable and beautiful as Live (to me)


oh and PS. pro design work is done on a mac too, but mac and PC both run Illustrator and Photoshop, how does that work?

Um, no it's not.

Problem is that "it's made for a mac" was your argument against Logic. I'm saying that's a horrible argument since most pro audio is done on macs, and your response is that Photoshop is available on both platforms, which has nothing to do with audio or Logic. You make no sense.

who said anything about workflow? I was talking about sound quality and more specifically - mixdown quality.

Stop talking out of your ass.

No one said anything about "personal DAW preference" - I personally love Ableton for its UI and ease of use but the sound quality of its mixdowns really doesn't compare to Cubase or Logic or Protools. It's a pretty well-known fact dude.
