The "Rockin mix"? I got shit from one friend over that. "I thought this was all going to be RAWK music!" No, it's not "rock".. it's ROCKIN... just a reference to the fact that it's all high engery shit.
Next one will be the opposite.. not all "chill" per se, but a definete downturn in terms of tempo. Songs to settle into, ease back, maybe even fall asleep to! Look at that! Themes! :D :D :D |

I think we should register a domain, www.cdsbydave.com

Honestly, I wish I'd kept the mixes that I made a couple of years ago.. they were just as good, though I can't remember exactly what was on there. I guess since I always had space issues with my old computer, I nuked them.
Siiigh. Maybe if I see the people I gave them to I can get copies and collect them again. There really needs to be an archive. |

Really, it's the same feeling as making DJ mixes, except you aren't constrained by bpms and single takes (unless you're a god-like DJ); that feeling of being able to share music with others. Sometimes you're exposing them to a rare gem you've discovered or maybe just having the opportunity of sharing a bit of yourself through the music you enjoy. Something like that, anyways. |

sorry, i do not have any of your old cds and i think it would be kinda weird to call someone up and be all "hey, do you got one of my old cds? cos i want it back to remisce". heh. stina. |

I'm more looking to get them back so I can rip them and archive them on my computer, and possibly make more copies for people who might like them. Just feeding the addiction.. although yeah I guess there would probably be nostalgia involved too.

YES!
I just watched it for the 8-kabillionth time the other night. This post reminded me of it. edit: Thank you IMDB. "The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway... I've started to make a tape... in my head... for Laura. Full of stuff she likes. Full of stuff that make her happy. For the first time I can sort of see how that is done." I love getting your mix cd's Dave! they are always a sure hit! :)
I think a mix cd is a really cool gift to get from someone, because musical taste is so personal and it's really cool getting a glimpse into other people's heads through listening to what they put on these CD's. I'd probably try to do the same but I'm just sooo lazy :P |

I'm making at least one for whoever I can remember when I'm at my compy making CDs.
My friend made me a mixtape earlier this year in an attempt to get me into Indie Rock (it worked). The first side was all post-punk (echo & the bunnymen, think talking heads-type stuff... lots of bassline to it), and the second side was labelled "zero zero whatevers" and was all new stuff. Lots of pretty good stuff. Pretty much the type of thing I aim for when doing comp's: Decent mix of older and newer stuff along some theme. Could be "stuff I've been listening to lately you might like", could have some other underlying theme.... But always fun to make. |
