Deproprovera
I've heard some bad and some good stories and am wondering if any of you girls have wandered into the world of 'the shot'
I've been on the pill for 9 trillion years and am starting to look at doing something else I know - no periods..and that might be worrisome at times - but i think i could deal, especially in exchange for the convience thoughts?? |

try it once and see if you and your body like it.
there is only one positive effect that i can think of, and that is convenience. getting a needle is pretty cool as well. the downside is that i felt more irrate and emotional. didn't get my rag and then had at least 2-3weeks of bleeding or/& spotting. i was also was unusually dry. depressed. all of these effects combined i didn't take it twice. neko Last edited by neko; Jul 16, 03 at 02:27 PM. |

it's not that it doesn't work, it might be that the failure rate is just a smidge higher (ie. 0.03% failure rate with the shot and 0.01% with "perfect use" with the pill). but then again, failure rates with "actual use" (ie. imperfect use) of the birth control pill is probably higher. :P obviously the shot will work differently for every girl, but generally, high progesterone levels may result in lower sex drives and may cause some girls to become more depressed. also because deproprovera is pure progestin, it's also apparently well known for causing an increase in appetite, hence weight gain. also, for the first 6 months, anything can happen with your period, from heavy bleeding, sporadic bleeding to no bleeding at all... personally, I wouldn't go on the shot simply because the pill I'm on works great for me and I wouldn't want to worry about the possiblity of having less than positive side effects by switching to something else. --Joanne :P |

I've never tried it and I don't want to. Taking a shot that can fuck with you're whole personality and can't be reversed... not cool. 3 months of bullshit side effects? Nah not for me. It's not THAT hard to take a lil pill everyday and IMO it's a lot safer. I've heard/seen too many bad outcomes for it to even think about doing it myself.
That and lets say you want to get pregnant in five years you have to stop taking the shot a couple years in advance so your body can get back to normal. Years to get back to normal?? *shakes her head* Pills all the way for me. |

my cousin and his fiance used the shot and she got pregnant so they ended up having the wedding much sooner.....
ive heard alot of horomone stories... not all have been "i turned into a raging bitch" some of them got overly sad - crying over everything. one of my friends ended up spotting for a month - 30 days straight and she was not impressed so went back on the pill after the depo wore off. but i still think its worth trying. i find that most of the time when im gettin over emotional or bitchy from my pill i can tell, and i either continue if i dont like the person or i just shut up and tell myself it'll seem stupid tomorow. |

I've tried it.
Twice. I bled for three straight months both times. I have a friend who's been on it for four years and hasn't had a single problem with it. No bleeding. No mood swings. Nothing. I think that every woman has a different method of birth control that will work for them. It's just all about trying different kinds until you find what works for you. |

I've never tried it myself, but besides all the horror stories i've heard (including the numerous ones above ie: once it is in you, its there to stay whether you become a raging phsycho bitch or not etc) are quite scary. I'm also sketchy about the fact that, unlike the birth control pill, the depo shot has not been used and studied for decades. No one knows what the real long term effects are, people could end up becoming sterile or have mutant children after long enough use and we'll never know untill a large amount of women have used it for as long as the birth control has been used. Also, I just can't see someting that messes that much with your period being healthy for your reproductive system.
I was thinking of trying the shot because I'm pretty bad at taking the pill, but I looked into it and it just doesn't seem like it's worth risking all the side effects. (that's my opinion though, it's up to you if you'd like to try it obviously) |

im curious about it...same with me curious about 50 billion other things. ive been on the pill for about 8 months now and its become a habit for me to take my pill along with lunch...but i still hate the sugar pill period... which gets me wondering about the shot because it sounds really hassle free, but of course a few catches. this month im gonna skip my sugarpills and see how my body handles it... hopefully it will be okay. i will continue to look into the shot... but i know FOR SURE..when the patch is legalized here i will try it out.
all these birth controls scare me a bit... my aunt have been trying to have a baby for over 2 years now and no luck at all, cuz she started on the pill when she was really young...for a long period. its a risk we all take... but i have to say the pill has been treating my skin really really well. also, I think the patch is around in BC... check with your doctor and I'm sure he/she will be able to refer you to a place that distributes them. --Joanne :P |

my friend is on it and she sporatically bleeds... once during sex and the guy told everyone that she was on her rag and didn't tell him... but it wasn't her fault. I personally haven't head a single good storie from it... one of my other girls in seattle was sitting in her room doing homework, listning to beats and found her self on her deck 18 stories up.. contemplating jumping. Talk to a nurse b4 you make any desisions and get some hard core facts. Another thing you could do is get your hormones tested... find out what levels your estrogen and progestogen is at... then the doctor can tell you what type of medication would suit you best. :)

I have been on it for 3 years. (and actually just got my shot today). The side effects haven't been so bad with me. I was quite emotional during the first injection that I had, however, I was always quite an emotional person anyways. I have also experienced a little bit of weight gain(no more than 10 pounds though). With the shot, your sex drive can either be decreased or increased. I have experienced both of these. I also had no period after my first injection (except for a few times...when I was a week late on the shot. woops). I also have NOT become a raging bitch. lol. I am the same person I was before I went on it.
I don't have any major complaints about it. I'm pretty happy with it, myself. However, everyone has different side effects, and the best thing to do is talk about it with your doctor thoroughly to find out if you're a good candidate for it. You can always try it once, and decide against it. I am thinking of going off of it one time to try a pill, as I have never gone on the pill before. If you have ANY questions at all regarding depo feel free to get ahold of me either through PM or my email/msn [email protected] -desiree :kimmie: |

Maryah, the emotional side effects seem to be some of the scariest ones. That's another reason i'm scared to try depo, my Doctor was actually iffy about putting me on the pill even when i was having emotional problems. My friends sister had the same problems as me and almost went crazy ( litterally) once she took the shot, and as mentioned before.. once it's in it's not coming out. So if you ever struggled with depression or emotional side effects from the pill thats another thing to consider. |

POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES OF DEPO-PROVERA - must receive injection every three months - loss of monthly period, change of appetite, weight gain, depression, hair loss, or increased hair on the face or body, nervousness, skin rash or spotty darkening of the skin, change in sex drive - irregular bleeding patterns - headache - nausea - dizziness - sore breasts - side effects not reversed until medication wears off (up to 12 weeks) - may cause delay in getting pregnant after shots are stopped - pregnancies, which rarely occur, are more likely to be ectopic (in a fallopian tube) |

I'm curious about it for its convenience and for the fact that it's more discreet than the pill, but i don't know if it's worth taking the risk. I don't wanna bleed for 3 months straight. At least with the pill i know that I can stop when I want to or switch brands within a month if I find that it doesn't work for me, but with the shot I really would have no choice but to suck it up for the 3 months.
also, taking a pill daily kind of reassures me that I'm doing things right. It's a pain taking a pill every day, and at times I've turned into a "raging psycho" (i feel sorry for my bf :c-tard:) but I also do menstrual suppression so that i don't have to deal with getting my rag. iono, the shot is something I'll definately try in the future but for now I think I'm quite content with the pill. I'm pretty damn responsbile about it too, so i don't worry that much. |

i went to the doctor to ask about the depo provera shot and she didn't seem too keen on it. she DID say that it was her personal opinion only, but like esi experienced, she said that some girls bleed for the entire three months straight and there really isn't anything you can do about it but ride it out. personally, i'm not really willing to take that chance. NO THANKS MA'AM! going to stick to the pill for now...at least until i can get my hands on the patch.

it's okay to do that, but you should let yourself get your period every few packs. but still, even half the number of periods you get is better than all :D |
