There is NO excuse.

I'm not without fault, for I have done both. But I was a lot younger and I realize now how stupid it was, and how lucky I am that I didn't hurt someone else or myself. I didn't do it more than a few occasions, but I was still very much in the wrong.

I think that driving under any influence, or even being too fatigued at the wheel is unnecessarily endangering youself and others. You are an irresponsible moron with no consideration for others and no appreciation for life if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The sad part is, that you will probably end up injuring or killing someone other than yourself.

And I realize that there are studies that have been conducted that come to the conclusion that driving while stoned is "safer" than driving drunk, and I also realize that many people on this board and people I know have driven under the influence without incident. But the thing that I don't understand is why do you take the risk? What makes you think that you are invincible? And what makes you think that you can play god and take the lives of others into your own hands?

I have NO respect for people who drive under the influence. I think that penalties should be harsher than what they are for offenders that are caught. In my 6+ years of driving, I have been able to take the time to make other arrangements to get around or for places to stay if I am going to drink. It's the responsible thing to do. I don't let my friends drive drunk, and I am often the designated driver. There are so many other options like cabs, the Driving Alternative, bus/skytrain or staying at a friend's house. Or if none of those are going to work for you, maybe you just shouldn't drink or blaze that evening.

You stoners and drinkers can go on believing what you want, but I just wish it wouldn't take getting caught, or even worse, a fatality to change your mind. Like I said before, unfortunately you will probably end up injuring or killing an innocent person instead of yourself.

Oh, and happy 1000 posts to me!

i don't understand how the whole concept of not condoning something but making it allright for yourself works? Yeah, sure, you probably trust yourself more than you do anyone else behind the wheel, but it seems totally hyppocritical to not excuse anyone else doing it while you yourself can.

i've been guilty of doing both once, and trying to explain how it all went down would just be making excuses. i don't think either is okay, and i will try not to put myself into situations where i end up resorting to that again.

For all you drunk drivers, I would like to direct your attention to Kraig's post in The Lounge about a (suspected) drunk driving incident. It can't happen to me, right? Heh. Think again:

http://www.griefworksbc.com/DaytonUnger.asp

^Or this link. The statement is written by my aunt in reaction to losing her son, my cousin, Dayton Unger, to a driver who was under the influence of marijuana. All you people who think it's ok to drive stoned.... it's people like you who take lives away from people like my cousin. A damn shame.....

FACT: Driving under the influence is bad. Excuses are LAME. I hate the attitude of 'sometimes it's not so easy to just take a cab'. In my 11 yrs of driving not once have I had to drive under the influence. I plan ahead every time. I cab home, I bus home, I stay with a friend, I use Drving Alternatives to take me and my car home. If you can't afford to take a cab home maybe you should rethink your night out.

I'm seriosuly not trying to hate on any of you but I find it appalling that such a casual attitude exists around this. Driving under the influence costs people lives, their own or someone elses. Trust me, I know.... 3 very important people in my life have been lost to me.

Sad fact is when your drunk you dont always think properly and driving home to your own bed seems like a damn fine idea at the time..

Thats cuz some people smoke a lot of pot and are very experienced with it. I'm not all driving around going "duuude im trippin out" and laughing uncontrollably. I'm driving as normally as i would if i wasen't stoned. This isn't the same for everyone, some people can't even have a few hoots without flying a kite. I never smoke before putting myself in a situation that i haven't already been through. Only thing i might get is paranoid, then i end up telling everyone in the car to shut up, turn down the music a bit, and study the road like a book. I understand everyones views though, it could cause accidents for some people who are stupid and knowingly drive down a road knowing they are too stoned to concentrate on the open road.

As for the alcohol thing, don't do it!

The thing is, all my friends here drive pissed drunk or stoned, but they learned to handle it.... I couldn´t do that, I have not enough faith in myself.
I won´t be an idiot anymore Prissypants ;o)
I think your friends need to realize it's not about them.
especially when they are drunk or stoned.
as far as i'm concerned you guys are very selfish for not thinking about others on the road.
hopefully you mean what you say when you put down i'm not an idiot.

Driving drunk is the dumbest thing you can possibly do. Something bad WILL happen one time when you drink and drive, it always works like that.

When I first started smoking weed there was no way I would drive... but after years of smoking, it doesnt affect me like it used to. I have NEVER been pulled over in all my years of driving. When Im baked, I concentrate...simple as that. I drive the speed limit, and take it easy. Ive gone through roadblocks after smoking doobs and had no problems. Weather your sober, or baked... dumb driving is dumb driving. Either way you slice it, a car can be a deadly weapon and it has to be respected. I do it for a living, and would never take any risk that would endanger myself, or anyone with me. The problem is, people react differently. Unfortunately, weed makes some people do stupid things like drive like assholes and put themselves and others in danger.

If you drink and drive, youre a fucking idiot!
