so is there an actual bylaw in Vancouver that states you cannot stay open after last call? or is its just a case of it not being a viable option in under the current business model?

clubbers are rude to begin with.

I think that taxis should be allowed on those streets... no regular traffic

then again, that punishes the servers and bartenders and managers who have just worked their 10 hour shift and wanna go home, but don't want to have to walk 10 blocks to their car.

Instead of no Skytrain after 1am (and trains about ever 6-8 minutes before that), how about trains about every 15-20 minutes after 1am? The cost of running 3-4 trains per hour for another 2.5 hours wouldn't be huge. Also, to help cover costs of this, drop some redundant NightBus routes, like the one to Surrey Central. Between savings in paying a bus driver, gas, bus maintenance, and for what I'm sure would be increased ridership (a 40 minute Skytrain ride is a lot more tolerable than an hour and a half bus ride), and you should basically have a wash in costs.
I agree. The shoddy skytrain scheduling has kept me from going to a few shows.

I don't see why the Skytrain isn't 24 hours.
Between 2-6 AM they only need run them every 15 minutes and alternate which line it is.

They have camera's littered all over Gastown and that hasn't really changed a whole lot in that neighborhood.

It's a difficult situation to tackle just because bars/clubs have to maintain a certain revenue to be able to pay their rent/staff so having the bars stay open longer isn't very realistic; most clubs have last call and shut down shortly after.

If you look at the setup of Granville it's almost a lose lose situation - you can't have that many bars and clubs on one strip and not expect to have problems.
It's unnecessary and it inevitably attracts large crowds which in turn causes drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Well for example clubs in most parts of Europe are open till 6 - 7am and have transit working 24hours and there isn't as many problems as there are here in Vancouver.

Clubs should be open till 6am, but stop serving alcohol at 2am. The clubs should just charge a higher cover fee, something like $15 - $20, expansive I know, but I'm sure that the people who want to party downtown will still pay that cover fee. I beleive that most people won't want to stay till 6am anyways without alcohol, so they'll want to leave, but they'll at least have a chance to sober up abit.

Also the suggestion to have the skytrain working every 15 - 20 minutes between 1am - 6am is a great idea. Less people driving drunk = less car accidents. Also more people will want to go clubbing downtown if they know they can get home safetly without having to drive drunk or pay a shit load of money for a taxi or worse have to take a hour and a half night bus home.

HOW ABOUT IF YOU HAVE TO CROSS A BRIDGE OR GO THROUGH A TUNNEL TO COME DOWNTOWN AND YOU ACT LIKE A DOUCHE BECAUSE YOU'RE IN THE "BIG CITY", YOU GET YOUR BRIDGE AND TUNNEL PASS TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU AND YOU CAN GO PARTY AT ROOSTERS OR THE MIRAGE.

Vancouver is still between a large Major city like TO or Montreal and a small cozy city like Victoria. I think a lot of ppl in Vancouver dont want to see this city continue to grow. However with the Oylimpics on its way... we cant really help it. Im sure 24 hour transit and later night clubs will deffinently happen by that time. Not to mention with our amazing rang of landcaping, a lot of ppl rather get up early and enjoy the out doors than party till dawn. I dont think Vancouver is really ment to have an outstanding crazy night life like other citys... allthough it would be nice if we had some quality to our clubs and an understanding for those who do.

extending the hours of bars is the most pointless thing. They already did that, you still have the same amount of shitters wandering around.

thank god i dont work at a granville street bar.. fuck granville street, the city should tear it down.

sorry jim.

Easily the best idea yet.

A majority of the people causing trouble on the mall are the "bridge and tunnel" folk.

Just look at mid-weeks on the mall, hardly any problems. Why? Because the suburbanite warriors can't make it down here on weekdays.

YOU DON'T SHIT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD!!!

This, of course, is excellent. I advocate a somewhat more extreme procedure: Wait until a particularly busy night and firebomb the entire strip.

Rebuild, sans assholes.

The cameras will not prevent violance, if people will fight they will fight with a camera present or not.
CCTV is a very good preventitve method in the UK. Yes, people will be stupid and cause fights regardless. But, with cameras and $1000 fines if caught for fighting and being too drunk in public, it works. I used to live in the UK and CCTV (although they go a bit overboard there with it) is a very good method of stopping that kind of behaviour. Especially in a confined area like Granville St. I also think scanning drivers licences would work well as well, if everyone was on board.

gnosis has a spectacular aura aboutgnosis has a spectacular aura about
Bridge and Tunnel people. Part-time party people. Posers. Shysters. Gang-stars. Bar Stars. Wannabees. Loogans. 'Roid-boys. Chachi's. "Family". Hoochies. Jocks. Stag-in-a-stretch-SUV. And the incessant College-Kids.

Downtown people don't create the problems.

I've said this for ages.

If they just put a ban on shitty top 40 & "RnB", downtown, on weekends, they'd get rid of a lot of goombahs!

But, HEY! These twats NEED a place to go thump each other, in order to keep the good places/parties happening without them!

Longer pub-hours in the 'burbs, so the wankahs _STAY_ there, the situation, downtown, wouldn't exist, as it is, now.

Frosty
(yet, another opinion)
