Fixing Stanley Park vs fixing the problems in Vancouver
With the TV coverage of the storm damage, the great PR donation by Jimmy Pattison and spin doctoring by the BC Government they have raised a nice chunk of change to fix a park.
While this is all happening hospitals are short staffed and thousands of people are homeless in the cold. But this is all been bumped off the radar again because BC Place had a bad case of flatulence. Unreal. I wish I had a million dollars to burn one day. |

^agreed
junkies don't bring any revenue to the city so they are being neglected over heritage and our city's pride a lot of people blame the homeless for their misfortunes many others want to be seen as green supporters, not junkie supporters politics are pretty silly and selfish i'm very curious to see the solution for homelessness the olympic committee will be implementing |

There are enough resources to allow people to get off the streets, it's more of a personal choice for the majority of those people then it is a case of getting fucked by our government in my opinion, millions are spent early on things we don't see behind the scenes in the down town east side. You give a junkie a million dollars, he'll still be a junkie, just with a suit and tie who will probably not give to society more then he already is. We can put more clothes on their back and warmer places to sleep, open up more shelters and give out more, but they will still be there tomorrow.
This is my two cents, from what it seems. Then again, what do I know about losing everything and being homeless, right? Last edited by neoh; Jan 18, 07 at 09:02 PM. |

i think yeah some homeless people arnt homeless by choice, but many are and many dont try hard enough to get out. Those who truly do wish to get out, get out. There are rehab centers and homeless shelters and income plans to assist people. Anyone can get a job working labour for 8 bux.
Its brain chemistry adiction that keeps some of these people addicted. You can force them to go to rehab so unless they make the choice themeselves theres no point giving them more then they already have. |

the human race is a virus, a virus that'll never go away. Ofcourse they're going to fix stanley park first. Attract tourists so they can take over our city. Spend all their money and live on the streets.
a cycle that'll never end... i say fix up stanley park! |

my uncle used to live on the streets in east hastings. He knew the people who lived there well.
He said not to feel sorry for them because most of them choose to be where they are. They are comfortable in the lifestyle, it's what they know. Even if they had the opportunity to change, most wouldn't. These are not my opinions or observations. These are words from someone who actually knows what he's talking about. Like, sure it sucks. But so does going to work everyday. It's all a lifestyle preference. |

i was on the bus today with my friend. We heard two crackheads talking about one of the girls that regularly pisses off the staff at the bar i work at.
she hung herself. Most of the problems that homeless people suffer could've been avoided one way or another. My friend told me about how they were brought up getting beaten and shit. If i was getting beaten daily, fuck.. i'd put myself up for adoption |

I am 100% with Hammered on this one... It doesnt make sence that we can raise so much money to save trees or for ppl who come from other places and than continue to let our neighbors in the streets suffer.

I think it would be a much easyer problem to solve if the government looked at the root of the proble. A lot of the ppl on the streets come from broken homes or a poor education or are mildly disabled (not disabled enough to have government care) However when taking money out of social services and education it leaves a lot of cracks open for kids to fall through... and they fall right into the street. I already knew of one girl who was foster cared, low self esteam, stuggled academicly, poor social skills and probly had FAS. She ran away at 13 (who was there to help her?) I hate to think she could be on the streets of hastings. Your right that the park being in top condition will bring in more money, but only to the ppl who already have the money. If the buisnesses want to invest... thats fine. But I think the public and especialy the government's money should stay out of it. They have already invested enough money for the Oylimpics to help those buisness why are they investing even more when there already way over budget? Quit being so right sided! the government can do lots of things and waste alot of money but people are still going to find a way to destroy themselves.
there are social problems that lie at the root of homelessness but no amount of money or government programing can fix the roots of the problem. well unless of course we regulate whose allowed to have children, but even then there will be problems. I personally know children of multi millioniares who grew up in a loving family that presented endless opportunities but still became herion addicts that live on the street. there was nothing any government or charity organization could do to stop it. |

The Fast Ferry and Lion's Gate Bridge projects combined would have fueled quite a wicked bender for the entire population of BC eh?

With out a doubt we cant save everyone and your absolutly right about the few rich kids who end up in the streets. However there are far more kids who grow up in crumming conditions and situations such as the one I mentioned. Basikly I see a lot of kids who are in a recipe for disaster. A high percentage of ppl on the streets have mentle illnesses or are mildly disabled. I had one social worker explain that it would be best if the 14 year old girl I worked with would actualy do worse on her iq test so she would be cared for by the government after 18. Everyone knows that the mind set shes in, she wiould either end up in jail for steeling or a prostiute like the rest of her sisters (she doesnt know about) But if she scores of a 75 on her iq test... then she on her own at 18 no matter what. Its the system thats making cracks for these kids to fall through in. Not to mention the high percentage of kids who are growing up in poverty. Growing up with a low self esteam and depresion can only lead to drugs and stealing. Its a constint cycle the government hasnt be intrested in solving besides paying for drug users needles. It about solving the root of the problem, not puting a band-aid over it. Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jan 19, 07 at 12:33 AM. |

any social program that was developed to combat those problems would just be a money pit with no tangible results. all the government can really do is mitigate some of the harm. Last edited by SEAN!; Jan 19, 07 at 12:56 AM. |

An addict cannot be helped unless that addict decides they want to stop. One major problem in that field though is that fact that there is a 5 - 7 day wait list to even get into a detox facility, trying to keep that small window of oppertnity open for 5 -7 days is basically impossible.
Aside from the usual bickering that occurs in threads such as this, doe anyone have a productive and feasible solution? I mean we are all aware of the issues with addicts and such; but does anyone have any ideas? - ë |
