I watched that one too. My mother called me and told me that they were talking about a book like the one I had lent her so I turned it on. They were marketing basic metaphysical theory as an innovative self-help manual. I don't think they mentioned philosophy, nor give credit to Aristotle or Descartes or anyone, once in the entire show. Sly mo'fuggin scam artists, I say. |

The anti-Olympics organizing in this city is fairly weak and does miss the broader core issue, ie. land claims like senior mentioned. At the same time though, most of the people that I have met, or heard about at these events are caring, frustrated people who really want to do something about the fucked up things going on around them. This reality is invaluable, and whereas challenging them like senior did is a positive and effective course of action, shallow over generalizations don’t accomplish anything in regards to trying to creative more effective resistance/social justice movements, nor do they educate people, or galvanize their interest towards more effective modes of intervention.
Actions such as those taken by some at the Olympic clock unveiling were reactionary, alienating and pointless. Despite our ongoing back and forth senior, a suggestion would be to carry some pertinent literature on you all the time covering things that you either organize around, or things that you have down really solidly, and can engage in discussion with people about. I never stop being amazed how easy it is to get even the most hostile and belligerent people to come for a coffee and have a genuine discussion, which then opens up the opportunity for you to really educate someone. Most of the time the hostility and/or belligerent attitudes stem from frustration and/or feeling useless or demoralized. Let the so-called political authorities and academics hurl their empty critique, for regular folks in the know, its more important to provide leadership and guidance to those who are going to have to carry on the fight when we’re dead and rotting. That being said, you’re critique or picking apart of peoples understanding (or lack of) doesn’t have to be gentle. ez |
