dumb protesters
I was walking down the street today and saw a bunch people with signs protesting the Olympics. So I went over to ask what they were doing. The woman I talked to was holding a sign that said "no Olympics on stolen land." So I asked her what she meant by that and she said that the Olympics shouldn't be held on stolen native land. So I asked her if it might be a better idea to hold a sign that reads "settle land claims now?" She said that a good start would be if the government would come to the table to negotiate this. I asked her what she thought the treaty process was that has been going on for the last 15 years? She said that it had a lot of problems and flaws. So I again asked if it might be better to hold a sign demanding that land claims be settled now? She asked why I was so fixed on not protesting the Olympics and I explained that I wasn't, I just thought she was wasting her time. I then reminded her that we had a plebiscite on the Olympics that passed by a land slide. At this point some protest kid told me that it actually passed by 51%. Now assuming for a second that he was right 51% is no land slide but is a majority, so should that not end the debate? For the record I told him he was out to lunch and should check his facts
I think it is great that people care enough to get out and try and make a difference. I have been involved with protests and civil disobedience myself. However if I'm going to do it I will definitely take the time to have a FUCKING CLUE and at least know some basic facts surrounding what I am protesting! [end rant] |

Without people protesting and bring forth these issues the world would be a different place. I understand what senior says and they should be knowledged about the topic. But dont just turn a blind eye, support if you agree and if you dont, then feel free to express it in your own way.

Great point Senior, If your going to protest make sure you have your facts straight and you do it in a professional and respectable manor. I notice a lot of protesters who exaggerate and ill stop listening to them or supporting them. Same goes for them being rude and vandalizing things. Make better use of your time by education ppl and making them aware then trying to get such negative publicity's by the media.

When I first got here, I was intrigued by the amount of free time people had on their hands to protest in the middle of the week. I thought they must really care about the cause to skip out on work, school, whatever. I thought it was kinda cool how these people felt the need to express what was on their minds...
But too many happen too often. It really doesn't say much about these people other than the fact they're whiney. I agree, a good old fashioned protest for a nobel cause is a great idea. But when too many of them go on, not enough people know what the real problem is at heart, because all we're seeing is a large group of pissed off people. Now, I just see the signs they're holding (confident that on the back of that sign, is another protest sign for a different cause), look at the people holding the sign... and smell the pot and think to myself "now there's time well spent". I'm not against protesting, I think it's wonderful we live in a democracy. People should have the right to free speech without the fear of persecution. It's one of the main reasons I love Canada so much. It's the lack of education and respect that some of these people show the world (because you know they're always the ones to make the news!) that really ruin the whole concept of a nobel protest for the rest of us. |

Honestly, the native land was conquered a long time ago. It's over. It's no longer native land. If they start giving back native land, where does it stop? Should all the other countries in the world who conquered land hundreds of years ago give it back? Every bit of land in Europe was conquered by someone at one point. You can't give it all back. Let it go. It's in the past.

I'm in total agreement with Blake; Make love, not war.
The Olympics, however expensive they may be, will be the most colorful thing this city has seen for a long, long time. The International appeal of this event is worth the cost of putting it on. You need a world class city for an event like this and we got it, so protesting against the Olympics is stupid. |

The last time I was there, Salt Lake City didn't have anything to world class about it. Have you heard anything about Nagano or Albertville lately? I do agree with you that the Olympics are going to be a good thing for Vancouver, they still have a good legacy and facilities left over in Calgary. |

some people believe that the negatives should be corrected, or at least an effort made, before we take on the games. people who want to see changes with the DTES and issues with homelessness DO have something to protest about. its not stupid, its an opinion. |
