My Australian girlfriend has gone through nothing but bullshit trying to become a Canadian citizen. She has a 4 year degree at SFU, is currently working for the government, and still might get kicked out of the country. This countries immigration process is a huge joke. Full of catch 22's, red tape, and dated regulations. (Oh, unless you have 50k in your bank account, then you're welcomed in) - it's funny people come over here with no education, no work experience, no 2nd language, etc and thier welcomed into Canada, given everything they need until their set up, etc and someone who comes here from a commonwealth country (even though they don't have to!) to go a Canadian university and get a degree here, pays 25,000+ in tuition, works and pays taxes, does EVERYTHING he or she can do be a good citizen still gets kicked out. It's bullshit and it's unfair that the entire system/process is based on physical minorities.
Sorry, end rant. So, no it's not that easy. Last edited by firestar; Feb 24, 07 at 12:52 PM. |

My sister is in the final stages of the immigration process to Australia. It did take a lot of work, on her part and for my Mom and Dad here, but as long as everything is ok with her final application for residency, she's in. The major factor that helped here was being in a co-dependant relationship there (having a long term Australian boyfriend).
My Dad was born in England so eventually she'll legally have 3 passports! I think this is all part of her plan to become an international elite forces super spy like Jason Borne or something. Let me know if you have any questions about the process that I can pass on to her. |

I'm guessing you can have a Polish passport if your parents were born in Poland, he was born in Italy so he can have an Italian passport and he's lived in Canada long enough to be a citizen so he can have a Canadian passport.

I know its very difficult for Canadians to get residency in Australia. Unless its changed, my understanding was that Canadians could only be in Australia for a year and couldnt work at one job for more than 3 months. Unlike the Aussies who came here could work at a job for as long as they wanted and could stay here on a working holiday visa for 2 years. So not fair.
Anyways the reason they are so sticked with ppl from say Australia and England is becaase there much higher educated ppl and know the language. They dont want them competing with their country's own educated ppl. It also depends on what kind of job your searching for. If you looking for a job that is already hard enough for that country's ppl to find than good luck, but if you looking for a job where that country has a hard time finding ppl than its much easier to find a job. IE why we have lots of nurses who are aussie becuase we cant suply enough of our own. This changes every year. |

but to answer your question Gunter S, it's just the working holiday permit program, that's kinda reciprocal- they allot about 7000 spaces each year for Aussies to come here, and Canadians to go there, and work unrestricted for a year. The work is not set up for you though, it's just that you can head over there and basically work in any field- and i'm assuming the hospitality/ tourism field is pretty easy to get into, because there's a huge market, which is why so many people end up doing that. so, there's no special luxury resort program that i'm aware of (unless maybe you get a job with sheraton or something, and can get posted overseas??)... but i assume that if you go to the highly touristed areas (Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef), then it would be pretty easy to land some work like that. Good luck :) I'm jealous, I wanna go home for a bit!! |

hehe, it's sure not like Australia's the worst place in the world... but it sure would be nice to just be able to be here in Canada with my boyfriend, living my life, without worrying every couple of months that i'm gonna get kicked out! |

i'm currently doing it the other way, and am applying for a Canadian working holiday permit right now to try and stay here, and it's only valid for 12 months. Boo :( that would be sweet if i could get one for 2 years, i guess they changed it recently?
