Books

Anybody got any good books that you'd like to recommend? I've stopped reading for the LONGEST time, but I just started up on a really good book, and I want to continue and make this a habit from now on. It just helps me escape from my life for a bit, and in a healthy way. Keeps my mind off crapola, and totally absorbs me.

I'll make 3 recommendations...

Memoirs of a Geisha by ?...sorry, forgot! :024:
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
and the book that I'm reading right now, which is now one of my fave books, if not my fave...

Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member by Sanyika Shakur aka Monster Kody Scott...soooooo good. :051:

obviously my favorite is "Say cheese...AND DIE!" by RL Stein. that man is a genius. the whole goosebumps collection is simply priceless.

but on a more serious note:

"long road out of hell" by Marilyn Manson

read it (Twiggy Ramirez interviews EVERYWHERE)

"the bell jar" by Sylvia plath...

"HELTER SKELTER" by Vincent Bugliosi

it's all about Charles Manson and the Manson Family.

i love that book. Probably my favorite of all time!!

(a few years ago, i emailed Sadie Mae Glutz after reading Helter Skelter)

(sadie was part of the manson family. she killed Sharon Tate and Rosmary LaBianca....but she never responded to my email)

look out! HELTER SKELTER!!! LOOK OUT!

Yikes! Those books seem really creepy, but I'll check em out for sure! Definitely not 'my style.' I love Monster...it's about straight up bangin' between the Bloods and the Crips in L.A. Usually, I'm more into historical fiction books. I like to learn about the times 'back then,' and also about different places in the world and how it was.

i love books about murderers and stuff. i love reading about their mindset and motivation. it totally intrigues me. perhaps i should go into criminal pyschology. i love finding out what makes people tick.

i'm currently reading "the misbegotten son" it's just a compilation of interviews with Arthur Shawcross (the Rochester strangler)

very interesting.

Sammy...we had this convo before. About being intrigued by those crime shows, where they pick apart crime scenes to find the suspects. I've thought about going into criminology, but I'm not much of a science person. But you know what would be the coolest? We should be side-by-side dectectives. You use your photography skills and take pix of the crime scene, and we'll be world famous together! We can do art with crayola markers on our breaks too!! How good does that sound?!?! :029:

MWAHAHA!! GEEEEENIUS PLAN ERICA!

we have to come up with a name for our CRIME FIGHTING TEAM though...think think think...

Crayola markers...I LIEK I LIKE....there's nothing better than washable crayola markers...i already told you this...but for everyone else: USE WASHABLE CRAYOLA MARKERS...and draw something...and then when you're done, get a wet paintbrush and just go over the lines on your drawing and the ink will BLEED and it'll look all fucked up. i like doing that when i'm bored. i draw my face in black washable crayola markers..and then i throw water on it and it makes me look all sad and fucked up. it's great!

Azn here's a list you would like

if you like historical fiction then check out
Mary Queen of Scotts i think its by Reah Tannahil, who also wrote King Henry the eighth.
I'm reading both of them right now and can't put either of them down.

I read monster and loved it. I've also read Memoirs of a Geisha and really like that too.

A couple of books that everyone should read:
Even Cowboys get the Blues by Tom Robbins....thankyou drew for making me read it

1984 by Aldous Huxley (same guy who wrote animal farm)

Demon Box by Ken Kesey - this doodes a genius. also wrote Electric Acid Kool-Aid test. Another incredible book for anyone whos ever done drugs.

Soul on Ice by Eldrige Cleaver. Who also was an incredible genius and put alot of things into perspective for me. Once an LA gang member, he wrote this book while in prison for serving a sentance on 2 counts of rape. He followed it up with a book called Soul on Fire, which i havent read yet but will soon.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THESE BOOKS!!!!!

we jus read 1984 in english class...that book was really good...especially the last 150-100 pages...the whole time he's being held in the in the ministry of love of something...i don't wanna ruin it for anyone but i found it a lil depressing...but that was one of the reasons i liked it because i was so into it that i actually felt for winston...i think thats what his name was...

i should also suggest the entire collection of star wars novels...theyre sweet..especially ones that involve alot of luke skywalker and other force capable beings..so cool...the force is the shit...

i've only read one book by orwell..."Animal Farm"

I also like reading books of fucked up poetry...like Sylvia Plath and Eaven Boland and stuff...

Pablo Neruda is also pretty cool..he wrote most of his shit during the Ecuadorian Revolution and it shines through in his work. good shit.

Breezy: a couple canadian authors come to mind...

Margaret Atwood...she wrote the book "The Handmaid's Tale" and she also has a new book out that's won countless literary prizes and awards.

Micheal Ondaatje or whatever? The guy who wrote The English Patient. he was born in Sri Lanka (i believe) but he's considered a Canadian author because he's lived most of his life here.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is really good. has anyone else read it?? it's like a female version of Orwell's "1984"....

Though it's nothing like how females here live their lives...it's seems like we can relate to it so well...(well, me and my step sis and step mom anyway):029:

I definitely recommend it....just don't rush it..that was my mistake. i read over half of it in one night because a report was due on it the next day.:002:
