The Z-80 was a popular business computer in the 1970s with a lot of software written for it. It used the Z-80 processor and operated on Digital Research's DOS. A techie legend is about the CEO fo Digital Research getting approached by IBM to write a DOS for their first personal computer, the IBM-PC. The IBM people followed him to the airport because they wanted to get moving on their project, but he told them to "blow it out their ass" in no uncertain terms and took off in his private plane, he was an aviation hobbyist. Eventually Microsoft won the project and this was their first major foothold on the Personal Computer market before a long line of many successes which brought them to their present position today. The Z-80 softcard was manufactured to give compatibility to all of the popular Z-80 business software packages at that time. In the 1970s Microsoft's main business was writing software emulators for this purpose as well as their main selling product, BASIC, which was included with most personal computers at that time. BASIC always was and remains the pet project of Bill Gates. |
