here is what you must do. don't listen to anyone else, if they don't agree they're short bus candidates.
1)buy a pair of used technic 1200's for around $800-$900. do not buy anything else. not only are they the industry standard, but they last pretty much for ever, so if you decide to sell them a couple of years down the line you'll be able to get roughly what you payed for them. pretty much every time you play in a club or at a party, or in someone elses living room you'll be playing on these. don't buy anything cheaper, they'll suck, and they'll be worthless if you try to sell them. and did i mention they last FOREVER! mine are 11 and 12 respectively. what with inflation, if i sold them now i'd get about the same amount for them used as i paid for them new......NICE! once again.....USED TECHNICS 1200's! 2) if your used 1200's come with used cartridges and needles....buy new needles, but not new cartridges, unless you notice that they sound different, (one's quieter, one's "fuzzy"). make sure you have a matched pair. if the decks don't come with cart's and needles buy a pair of shure s35c's. they are the best deal for the money out there, they sound good, they have decent response and holding power for scratching, and they last a really long time, great for beginners. i thnk they are around $80 each for cart/needle. 3)buy a cheap mixer to start, don't spend more than $200 new. don't buy a gemini, they are far far too crap and they'll burn out really fast. i honestly recommend a realistic, from radio shack. half the djs i know learnt the basics on one. once you know how to beatmix you can probably find a friend who dj's who'll let you play around on something better. there are really only two levels of mixers cheap ($200 or so) and expensive ($1200 and up) most everything in between is just a cheap mixer with a few more bells and whistles....so you end up paying $700 for a mixer that sounds like crap in a year. 4)spend at least $150 on new headphones.....i suggest sony. don't cheap out on headphones whatever you do. these are your ears were talking about, and if you try to get by on a pair of wimpy Koss's you'll just end up setting yourself back with your learning curve, cuz you won't be able to hear shit in the mix. don't forget you need at least a largish bookshelf sized pair of speakers and a decent amp. don't try and run that shit off a shitty jvc all-in-one system. just do it. |

buy the best brand new decks and gear you can afford
cuz saving 200-300 bucks on turntables is nothing. thats how much i spend on records pretty much every 2 weeks but meh if you dont expect yourself taking it seriously just stick with laurens deal... and as for m3d's vs mk2's, i agree with mike.... ONLY thing i have beef against is that fucking click at the zero on the mk2's... but as for torque and control, the mk2's and the m3ds are pretty much identical |
|
|||
if the little click as you move the pitch fader on the mk2s is such a big deal to you as a dj that you have to spend a couple hundred more to get rid of it.... oh man... seriously...come on now...i mean really...lets be honest here...like for real...i mean...c'mon...please...bear with me here...really...in all honesty...im begging you.......a real dj can manhandle that click like it was a butter croissant begging to be eaten.
besides that... listen to automatic, he summed it up nicely. you dont need new techs. |

NinjaBoy under stabby's account.
http://www.electronicdynasty.com/for...threadid=15817 ^ Good deal on some tables... But like everyone else said, if your serious then get tech's. Period. I started out with some gemini 500's but managed to sell them for the same price I got them cause I was lucky. Mixer: Get a decent one. Make sure you have three eq's. Don't get one from gemini, kinda steer clear of numarks... A good beginner one is the staton rm-3. It costs 299, or perhaps, the american dj q deck, I've seen them for about 299 as well.. Headphones. Don't fuck around. I've tried to use cheaper ones from other dj's at shows (IE- Staton, or the sony 500's) and I couldn't do it. Make sure it won't distort at higher volumes. I use tech head phones, and have no problem with them. They seem to work quite well at higher volumes. Needles. Don't worry too much. Because your probably going to be using it on your home system. So get the stanton 500's. Costs: Tables 800-1200 (used) Mixer 200-300 Needles 45 each headphones 150 at least. Record wise. If your going to be buying a lot of records. It would be smart to start with final scratch. Simply cause you don't have any wasted money on a record collection so you could use that money for final scratch. Expect to spend 1000-1200 at least. Just for the gear. If your not willing to spend that much. Don't bother, cause then your just wasting people's time. Your gear will suck. You will hate it. You will quit in 6 months. If you don't do what I say, then your a chump. And will never play outside of your bedroom. __________________ As for djing itself. Make sure you do something interesting. If you can't manage spinning something orginal, and just wanna drop tracks that we hear on every weekend party, then you better be damn sexy. Cause quite frankly your not going to play out much. I meen just look at Lucy Lytes. |

First thing i would recommend, Research
Research everything: needles, decks(no brainer >> techs), headphones, records,labels, and so on Go downtown, talk to the staff at Tom Lee, L&M, dj's, and read online. You'll prob find the best deals thru networking. If no luck, Every thursday morning run down to your local 7-11 with a peice of paper and pen. Open up the buy & sell and write down the numbers, don't waste 4 $ on the buysell for 2 numbers. You will sometimes come across a killer deal and you really need to be on the ball. Phone them at 8, tell them you'll be down in a few hours. Bring someone with you with some experience Some people don't know the going rate for a tech 12 so they ask for a couple of hundred.. etc.. Everything above is also great advice You should also Spin Funky house. we need more female funky house djs If you do decide to spin, have fun and good luck =) |

courtney, if you want to go check out decks just give me a shout. ak47: fair enough, but if you actually go check out the used techs first rather than just buying anything that someones beaten the piss out of... =P |

yea, funky house plz. we have enough female breakbeat dj's. play some funky house you funky girl you.
and yea, once you think you have your set up and it's all nice and shiny in your bed room, then the real $$ killer begins, the addiction to buying vinyl and finding those gemms you -just- -must- have. just look at me, i am just begininng, i just financed my stuff through l&m, and the crazy amounts i spend on vinyl is going to have me living with the people at woodwards soon. go go gadget credit card ! |
