North American GDP (Canada + US) vs. Global GDP
just thought i would share this with those that are interested...
YouTube - Hans Rosling: No more boring data: TEDTalks basically this is a little video with hans rosling... pretty interesting stuff... what i found most interesting about this tho is... lets say here in Canada, someone who makes $100 a day is considered to be 'doing ok' but nothing really special... when in reality if you compare it to how much people make daily in other parts of the world, africa + asia in particular... anyone making $100 or more daily actually falls into the top 2% (or less?) of the world. i find this fascinating, myself being from the one of the older 'eastern block' countries... anyways, thought i would share this with you guys... take care, tomek. |

Considering that what well over 60% of the population lives in Asia and Africa and that probably 90 - 95% of that population lives well under the poor line, these facts would make perfect logical sense. But also in a lot of places in Asia and Africa stuff is cheaper and less thought is placed on material possesions....

i was thinking the same myself. i suppose a 10 dollar meal is no where near 10 dollars in those parts of the world...
another intresting thing that i learnt from that little vid, as you have prolly too, is that "africa" cannot be treated as a single entity. there is a huge divide even between the countries withing africa. you always hear sentances like 'whats the strategy for africa' or 'this needs to be done in africa to fight poverty'. but in all reality i think each country needs to have its own game plan, rather then bunching it all up into 'one big problem'. tomek. |
