Kimmie once gave me shit for donating to a huge charity instead of one in Vancouver. It kind of stuck.
I would look into something local. Either on the DTES(if you can handle it, I did it in the past and it was very trying emotionally at times) or a loving spoonful, or meals on wheels. |

i took a look at their website and wasnt too impressed with the positions available... alot of it seamed like 'if a disaster happens, ull be trained and we'll call you' or 'learn why land mines are no good...'... dont get me wrong, i think its all very noble but i was hoping on something were i could make a difference locally. whats DTES? thanks, tomek. |

The TELUS Red Cross call centre is currently open to answer calls for flood questions / victims. This is a great entry level volunteer position into the Red Cross spectrum - the call centre is activated whenever required... they will also train you in first aid etc and disaster management where you can actually go into the field during disasters.
DTES - downtown east side. What are you passionate about? Is it people, children, animals? Find that out first before you just go and volunteer as like work its better for the organization and yourself to find a match. |

I just recently ended a year's volunteering at the Burnaby Youth Jail to commit myself fully to school.
It's definitely not the "typical" volunteer job, but it's definitely the most rewarding and fun volunteer position I've ever held. I worked with youth at the open-unit jail (both female & male) and coordinated an arts and crafts program. When I was no longer available to do that on saturdays, I switched to helping out with Home Ec at the school. The kids will respect you if you show them respect and treat them as a friend. I got along really well with the youth there and it was always nice when I heard from staff about how some of the kids missed me, or asked about me.. or were excited to have me. I never thought I'd get to the point in my life where I could coexist with teens (joke) or even earn their respect. It's always a great feeling to know that you brought something to brighten or lessen the burden in someone else's life, just by spending time with them and joking around, whatever. The volunteer coordinator there, Kathy, is GREAT. I'll forward you info if you're interested, but you have to be prepared to put in a long term commitment. You also must have a clean criminal record and references. |
