South Africa
I've been offered a job out in South Africa doing electrical, I've never left North America before and can only go off things i read and hear in the news for what type of place it is.
Really I'm just wondering how bad the racism is down there, whether I'll get robbed/car jacked and If someone is going to shoot at me (I'm white). - sounds stupid but I really want answers to these questions |

A freind of mine just got back from Burundi teaching PE not too long ago...changed his life. I guess he could hear gunfire in the distance some nights...and depending on where you go Violence is always an issue...but believe it or not eventually he got used to it...he met some awesome people..And is thinking about going back. ..it really opened him......from what he told me...Where he was teaching wasn't a very known part.....but i have no doubt that trip did something to him...insanley irriplaceable. This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity.....one that could shape who you are to become...and the people you'll meet...and just...the livin to be had. It would be crazy (in my opinion) to pass that up.

personally i hate the south african accent. I find it rough..
I work for a company that has a strong South African base for offshoring, and as such I work with a lot of south africans here in england. It sounds like a totally beautiful place where everything is cheap but the violence is very real and the stories I hear are enough to keep me from doing a secondment there. You can't just go to the beach and flop out anywhere. you can't walk alone at night. and the casual manner some of my coworkers discuss cleaning blood off their driveways is enough to convince me I don't want to live there. if you've got a thick skin and don't want to venture off the beaten path then you'll probably be fine, but if you're more of an adventuring type like me then you'll find yourself severely constricted or else in serious trouble. |

If you're an adventuring type, you SHOULDN'T go?? Your rationale is a little backwards. Be an adventuring type. Go to South Africa Webber, and have lots of fun experiences. Being adventurous doesn't have to be synonymous with being stupid, and ending up alone in the wrong part of town at the wrong time of night. |
