I want a new phone.

Gonna buy one in a few weeks. Kinda thinking a blackberry is a good idea since basically the only way to get ahold of my boss in a timely manner is to email him on his berry. Basically everyone I know has a pearl, which would be good for me bc it's small. I don't want a brick. Suggestions?

P.A.R.T.Y will become famous soon enough
Go to Toms Cellular in Kerrisdale and pick-up a nice PDA. Get a gig of mini ram while you're at it.
I've seen the upgrade world bro, and phones are seriously kicking ass at the moment. It's CPU run little MP3 units with mega bass and google space. I'm running a phat LG camera phone from the days of way back. A brick that's kept me talking and little else. A new phone would definitely be a step-up from the phones that I've encountered over the past few years.
That's another story...

Vote against BlackBerry right here. shoddy hardware and the interface is a bit of a pain.

What do you need all that functionality for? BlackBerries are for professionals or posers. Smarter, IMO, just to get a good quality PDA and a good quality phone, instead of combining the two and having a shitty PDA combined with a shitty phone.

Tim: My ringtone is a phone ringing. Partially because whenever some dumbass on the skytrain decides that their ringtone of SexyBack is so cool and unique that they let it play out, I feel like ripping out their jugular. Also partially because I'm sick of hearing some shitty 8-bit version of a song (or an mp3 of the song on a shitty speaker) and wondering "WTF is that?" - With a phone ringtone, there's no question.

Too many people go for quantity of features, not enough going for quality. As a result, quality in electronic products has been going steadily downhill for the past 10 years.

I partially blame corporations for taking the easy way out - make a shitty quality product that breaks in 2 years (coincidentally the same time the warranty runs out) and then you can charge them an extra $100 for the "next-gen" edition. But I also blame the consumer public for letting them get away with it - look at the XBOX 360. Everybody wanted one when they first came out, and then BAM, EVERY SINGLE ONE THEY SHIPPED ON DAY 1 WAS DEFECTIVE.

I LOVE my pearl. It's smaller than a regular blackberry, which means there's 2 letters per key, compared to a full berry with one letter per key... But I got the hang of it really quickly. You can play with mine this wknd if you like =)

I agree with you completely, half the people that have a blackberry have no real need for one.

Honestly though, I could probably use one as I do a lot of running around and constant checks on my email are a must for my line of business.

But you know what, I get by just fine with my day planner and my cell phone.

Yaaaaaay! Good stuff, thanks lady!

I need a berry or pda bc our email system at work blows goats and I can't even get WORD DOCUMENTS. Fucking joke. We're running Windows 95, it makes me want to cry. I also need to be able to take pics in the store and email them off immediately, which I can't do on our current system. So, it's either haul my laptop back and forth to work every day (with nowhere in the store to lock it up) orrrrrrrrr get a blackberry so I can actually get ahold of my boss, visual mgr, HO, etc.

I agree with a lot of points in this thread

Firstly, data devices are expensive. You pay about a minimum of $100 for a basic voice/data plan with a few optional features. IMO not worth it unless your employer is footing the bill. Why would you shell out all that money from your own pocket just so work email can bother you when you're not there, doesn't make much sense. If your employer agrees to pay the bill, go nuts.

Secondly, if you're getting a data device and you want something that is quality, get a blackberry.

It's either they e-mail me or call me incessantly on my "days off". I don't exactly get those. I'd muuuuuuch rather get an e-mail that I can quickly reply to than have a 15 minute conversation because 23948 other subjects come up in the call! :P

PRETTY MUCH BULLSHIT
HAD MY PEARL SINCE RELEASE DAY LASY SUMMER, OVER A YEAR OLD, HAS BEEN HEAVILY USED (TYPE OUT 1-20 WORK EMAILS A DAY + HEAVY MESSAGING) WITH ME EVERYWHERE.

HAS BEEN SAT ON, BANGED AROUND, TYPED ON HEAVILY, DROPPED ON CARPET, DROPPED ON CONCRETE FROM >4FT UP MORE THAN ONCE, FALLEN WHILE I WAS RUNNING, FALLEN OUT OF MY HOODIE POCKET WHILE BICYCLING AROUND THE SEAWALL.

WITH EXCEPTION OF SOME CASE WEAR (SCRATCHES AND PAINT CHIPS) ITS IN PERFECT CONDITION. BATTERY HOLDS A 2 DAY CHARGE EASILY, 3 IF IM LIGHT ON USING PROGRAMS.

MY BERRY BEFORE THIS DIED WHEN IT MET A LARGE WAVE OF WATER. STILL, EVEN THOUGH IT GOT DRENCHED, THE ONLY THING THAT BROKE WAS THE RINGER.

PROBABLY THE MOST RELIABLE HARDWARE PHONE IVE EVER OWNED, NEXT TO THOSE OLDSCHOOL NOKIA 5190S

RIM makes reliable hardware AND if you ever have an issue with their phone you should call them directly because they usually just replace it for you.

you want to talk crappy data devices, i can think of manufacturers that have way worse reputations- take treos for example, it's a miracle if one lasts you over 10 months.

I don't "NEED" a blackberry. But I like having one.

How many people "NEED" a cell at all. With the exceptions of people with work phones. the rest of us have them 'just because'.

And Natalie, if you get a pearl... I'll tell you where to grab protective covers etc, since Rogers doesn't have the best. You can scope mine out too when you play with my phone. =D
