usenet could be fast or slow, it's decentralized. isp's can have their own usenet setups so you can reduce the number of hops between you can the files. but if their usenet servers suck you're screwed. you can pay monthly for usenet accounts too and get crazy transfer rates.

isp's usenet servers suck balls. yes they're slow, yes the completion rate sucks and retention hah not even worth it.

i have a corporate giganews account (which i dont pay for), currently have 160 days retention (which will be 200 in 40 days or so) and 99.999999% completion rate. 10 connections, ssl encryption and it ALWAYS maxes out my shaw connection at 1270k/sec.

nothing like downloading a 700mb xvid file in 8 mins.
