You said it yourself, there's a lot of situations where you just don't readily have access to music (plane, gym, on vacation, out of town gigs, etc) Quote:

If all you need is mp3 playback in the smallest, slickest design around, get a shuffle. If you need a screen and want the best quality player for the money, get a player from another company like the new Sandisk player. If you're bent on getting an Apple product (whether you like their looks or are caving in to social pressure), then get the Nano. Note that if you're worried about limitations of the technology, I wouldn't be buying an Apple player. Out of all the mp3 players on the market, Apple's have the least features, and are the most expensive. Last edited by Billy Shears; Oct 18, 07 at 11:35 PM. |

Rhia, if you don't want any of the fancy bits you're best getting the refurb nano :) i think it's better than the shuffle because you're probably using your ipod for things like working out, etc. you don't get control over what plays on the shuffle, wheras with the nano you can pick what you play and even make playlists with workout music, chill music, etc. it's also much much easier to manage your podcasts on the nano, you can still put them on your shuffle you just can't control when they play

Hey Rhia I totally know what you mean. For the longest time I did not have any desire to own an ipod. Then last year or so I got an old model 1gb shuffle for free from my work, and started using it while commuting. It's great for drowning people out on the skytrain, and I also use it as a flash drive which is handy (I don't think you can do that with the new model ones though).
The shuffle works and all, but I think I'm going to upgrade to a nano because I'm getting sick of having to skip forward a million times to randomly find the song I want to listen to. Also, 1gb is definitely not enough, especially when it's playing songs at random; I've heard the same song twice in one day which is kind of lame. I also definitely don't see the need for having it play videos. Why would I want to watch something on such a tiny screen anyway? Just because I can? No thanks. As for using it in the car.. I don't drive very much so I don't feel the need for having an ipod in the car, but Rob has a nano + fm transmitter thingie that we've used on long rides before and it's perfect, especially if there's no radio (yes CD's work too, but with an ipod you have all your tunes at your fingertips instead of having to change CD's). For your needs, I think Myra's got it right. Refurb'd 4gb's nano's are only $105 from the apple store, which is such a steal! |

I own the shuffle. They are light, compact straight-forward and relatively inexpensive. They're really great for using during workouts.
I personally prefer something as simple and basic as the shuffle to anything too fancy. I can't justify spending a huge amount on a music-listening device. |

^ Thank you ladies!! Thats what I wanted to hear. I dont know if I could ever go refurb though after getting a referb phone that mysteriously decided not to work one day. If I took transit I would totally up grade as I would get a lot more use out of it, however this seems like something I may barely use once a week. Although it does seem annoying having to skip through tons of songs trying to find them.

I have a 6 gb (I think) Nano and an 8gb iPhone. I guess I don't really need the Nano anymore but I use it for running because strapping that small thing to your arm is a lot better than the heavier iPhone. I'm happy with the Nano - I can have music or photos on it, I never used the photo option though because all I wanted it for was music. The plus side to having one with more storage is that you can store all your music on it - essentially back-up in case your computer ever decides to crap out.
IMO go with the Nano, not the shuffle. Like everyone has already said, it's annoying to have to keep pressing skip to find the songs you want to hear! |
