ps iphone is sexy, but im holding out for gen2.
current iphone is lacking too many features... browser plugins/flash/java, removable battery, a2dp bluetooth profile, data input on calender, voice/speed dial, handwriting/stylus operation.. and thats just off the top of my head. a lot of these can be fixed with firmware upgrade but there are still hardware limitations like 3G. im waiting. edit i might be mistaken on any of the features i listed Last edited by meth0dical; Jan 02, 08 at 09:16 PM. |

next time research your purchase instead of assuming I haven't purchased an iPhone yet because a) i'm waiting until 2nd generation iPhones to be released and b) the is no unlock for 1.1.2 c) I'd rather wait until after MacWorld Expo before buying anything mac. where did you buy your iphone? if you bought it at the Apple Store in Seattle then you have the latest firmware version installed and cannot be unlocked, so you are screwed. |

^ If you like the Windows Mobile platform I HIGHLY suggest the Treo 700wx.
Probally the best phone I have ever had and Rogers just got a Treo that runs Windows (might not be the same model as I was with Bell when I had it). Something think about I suppose :) |

I've had it for six months, zero problems. Best phone I have ever had. The only thing that would make it better would be AT&T instead of fucking Rogers. GOD I HATE ROGERS.

Those of you that were on Fido and signed up for Unlimited Data for $50 and kept it, before they nuked it are the lucky ones. If you are really considering buying an iPhone I would check out this message board first and USE the SEARCH button before posting a new thread. ummm telus has $15/month unlim data (email, messaging, web browsing) and bell has $7/month unlim with the same stipulations. how is that expensive?
|
|
|||
and no provider will offer unlim data with tethering no matter where you are so thats not really a problem, thats why all the major providers offer wireless data cards for laptops.
side note bell only offers the plan with certain handsets, telus will let you add the $15/m data to any voice plan over $30... not on select handsets like people believe. |

so yeah... i have had the iphone for a while now.... and today i decided to stop being so lazy and go get it unlocked...
found out my version is the newest one (1.1.2) so i have to pay 150 to get it unlocked... haha shitty... oh well... i think i'll like it |

And the fact that when you change a plan you have to call back 239892745 times for them to get it right. And when they fuck up they somehow try to blame you (uh, not my fault your CSRs are idiots). I could go on and on and on and on... Once again, my bill from last month is WRONG. Which means that I'll have to spend another hour on hold and another hour explaining to them why it's wrong. ARGH. As if I don't have anything better to do with my life month after month. I never should have left Fido. |

Both Rogers and Fido data plans are highway robbery. |

Just that in that other 20% Telus' horror stories have been far worse than what I've heard from other companies. Most of people's problems with Fido or Rogers seem to be from them not paying attention to the plans they set up and then not being refunded when they call to get it changed. Telus, on the other hand, has a vicious track record of not following through on promises, giving "the runaround" (having to talk to about 20 people before you get someone that can actually help you), outright refusing to make any changes to a service until you threaten to cancel, and so forth. I don't look at when things go well, because every company on the face of the earth has those stories. I look at when things go horribly, horribly wrong. A company that knows how to deal with this is good in my books. |

when comparing EDGE and 3G (UMTS) you are looking at a max of 200kbps for EDGE and 384kbps, and i also think that the 384kbps of UMTS is more attainable, whereas the 200kbps of EDGE is a bit "in your dreams" - but both max speeds are based on the current traffic in the cell. But yes, UMTS is faster.
The new iPhones released in February will be 3G enabled. Maximum theoritical data transfer speed for 3G UMTS (WCDMA) is actually 2Mbps. The 384kbps download speed limit is set by most telcos & phones manufacturers for some reasons though. Regarding 3.5G HSDPA (maximum theoritical data transfer speed up to 14Mbps), trust me that your telcos in India will launch it pretty soon after launching 3G UMTS. 3.5G HSDPA is a relatively simple & cost-effective upgrade from a 3G UMTS network, therefore most telcos will take the advantage of it. The theory is pretty much like an upgrade from GPRS (aka 2.5G) to EDGE (aka 2.75G). We will start to see more & more 3.5G capable phones by early next year, where later it will followed by 3.75G HSUPA capable phones. For WiMAX (which is also referred as 4G & IEEE 802.16), it won't be any time soon making it into the mass market of regular cellphones' network (at least after 3.5G HSPDA implementation). Besides, most 3G & 3.5G networks co-exist with 2G networks (mainly for voice calls) too. However, you might see WiMAX usage on laptops & other mobile devices (eg. pdas, UMPCs & etc.) first instead. Beside the cost of implementation & a different technological approach, telcos will definitely safeguarding its current 3G & 3.5G networks (where they had invested so much for it) for a period of time before succumbing to WiMAX or even greater technology. You should strongly consider 3.5G capable phone especially if the data connection transfer speed matters. Furthermore, the speed difference between EDGE & HSDPA is much more significant. If the connection speed (& video calling for 3G) does not matter at all, then a regular EDGE/3G or even GPRS capable phone will do. Last edited by narc; Jan 10, 08 at 07:20 PM. |
