Less than 24 hours in the USA.....

what is my personal exemption?

According to the CBSA website:

24 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$50 worth of goods free of duty and tax

But it states nothing for under the 24 hours.

means that you can bring it over, but you should declare it and pay the appropriate taxes and duty

I think it can depend on who you get at the border though because me and ashlee went through once and said we had spent about $200 each and were not required to volunteer receipts or pay duty.

Usually for a day trip you can bring back $50 or so without paying any duty. That said, you may still have to. Just in my experience, they usually aren't too worried if it's a small amount.

does it matter? obviously it's not going to be MORE than $50 and if you are buying something less than $50 I'm sure you could get away with not mentioning it.

I am having some items shipped to Point Roberts, so I'll only be in the USA for 15 minutes or so, my order is under $50 so hopefully I will not have to pay any butt fucking duty!

Personally, I think that it depends on who is sitting in the booth at the border. If they feel that your answers are not loyal and confident, they will grill you. It also depends on what is being purchased.

It also helps if they got some actions the night before to loosen their feathers. LOL!

Uh... YES it matters! You don't have any personal exemptions for such a short period of time so that means you are required to claim any and all purchases, regardless of the amount.

And 'not mentioning it' is horrible advice. Get caught lying about what you're bringing back and worst case scenario is that your vehicle gets seized. I made the mistake of claiming only $200 when the total value between 3 of us was more like $400, and now my vehicle is flagged at the boarder for 7 years. AWESOME.

it defin. depends on who is in the booth.

i've had to pay on $50 for a trip only a few hours long....
but did not had to pay when with my mum and aunt with over $1200 for just a days worth of shopping. the officer claimed she couldn't find a pen to fill out the customs form.

it also goes for customs at the airport. coming home from NYC (we were of course over our limit) and the customs beast sent us over to the cashier to pay. where we were met with another officer who said "we don't want your money! have good night" this is the 2nd time a 2nd officer has sent us on our way without paying.

depends on the officers working and how they're personal mood is at that exact moment, which, is totaly wrong IMO.

Its all luck of the draw. There have been times where I said $300 or so each in a half day trip and they said to just go on ahead.
