Keep in mind that this is simply an application. Recently the opened up applications for a new FM Liscence in Vancouver.
Only one station will get it (if any at all). So far I believe the CBC has applied, the patterson group, and a few groups outside of BC.
The formats look mostly to be aimed towards 18-35. A couple of indie/alternative stations, a top 40 station, an 80's mix station, and a hip hop station.
However, although formats should be set in stone after the application. They aren't (IE- The beat's change from hip hop to top 40). So while it might be a great station, if they can't get the ratings/advertisers they will quickly change.
This process will take at least a year before the station who gets the liscence is decided. And a while after that before it's set up.
The appicant has to prove that there is a place for them in the market, they have the financial backing, buisness plan, and that there is a demand for this sort of station.
I would love to see a station like this set up, but unless it has huge backing I would be suprised if this station won. The application process alone costs over a million bucks in legal fees, application fees and studies.
That being said, the CRTC would probably like to see an independent radio station set up in Vancouver, so that probably helps the strength of the application.
If this station does get set up, I'd say in a year they would change formats. Probably to top 40 to go after the beat.
