HOCKEY NERDS: best goaltender modern era

Had a good argument the other day. Simple question, best goaltender since the 80s in the NHL.

The four identified were:

Roy
Brodeur
Hasek
and one guy kept yipping about Belfour



In the end, it came down to a Roy vs Hasek showdown, but to keep out bias I wont say who I was for until there are some replies.

As much as I hated Patrick Roy, I'd definitely give him the nod.

Roy has more Conn Smythes
Belfour was probably the most dominant of his "run"
Brodeur has lasted the longest as the highest play level

Hextall was a beast and had a couple goals.

I voted Roy though... one of my faves for a long time.

Hextall was a beast, but i don't think his reign was long enough. He's be one of my alternates on this list.

You also have to look at the number of rings each of the goalies have.

Roy is at the top of the list with 4.

One of the most underrated goalies of all time would be Andy Moog aka "HAB-KILLER".

The Richter/Beezer tandem was probably the best goal tending tandem since the Fuhr/Moog tandem.

Billy Smith was a great goalie, it's a shame he's remembered more for his "stickwork" than his actual prowess between the pipes.

Roy
he won 4 cups but was a huge failure in Nagano with Canada's pride on the line. if international play is not considered he would have been the best modern goalie.

Brodeur
where Roy failed to win a Gold medal Brodeur didn't. he also has 3 cups, Vezinas, and 4 Jennings trophies. by the time he hangs up his skates he will hold every major goaltending record. hands down he has accomplished more than any other modern goalie making him the best.

Hasek
great regular season goalie but never good enough in the playoffs. 1 cup just isn't good enough for best of all time.

Belfour was brilliant for a short time but was basically a head case and fucked up his own show.

Kirk Mclean was the last great stand up goalie and made the best save in Canucks history.

Yeah, but Brodeur played behind defensively minded teams all his career, in my mind Roy on the Devils would be more successful than Brodeur on the Avalanche/Canadiens. Roy also has 3 Conn Smythes in 4 Stanley Cup wins. One bad stint in Nagano (still only allowed 9 goals in 6 games) doesn't matter imo.

Brodeur is also a more complete goalie. he could make the big saves in the big game but could also play the puck out of the net. he is basically a third defenseman.

I could become great at playing dump ins if I played behind the trap, I'd probably fall asleep otherwise.

He's great, but lets be serious here, Roy was the ultimate competitor and probably the best playoff goalie of all time. Hasek was probably the best goaltender at any particular game throughout the year. Brodeur is a great goaltender that benefited from facing way more low percentage plays than most goalies.

The difference is Roy was a captain, probably more so than anyone else on the list. Granted I've never been in any of the dressing rooms :)

The intangibles Roy had are what made him great, nevermind his ability to stop a puck.

lets not forget, when he retired he was still awesome having a .920 save percentage and a 2.18 GAA.
