school and grief

uggh being in school is a really shitty thiing when ure trying to deal with a death...my teachers dont really seem to care all that much either
its like suck it up and move on....like i get thats what society expects but its not that easy and it feels stupid that i should be in a way punished for something out of my control- i mean obviously my grades are going to suffer becaause my mind is on other things...
and one teacher didnt even give me an extension on a test...

^THAT is bullshit. You should contact your ombudsperson or a student rep and find out your school's policy on death in the family. It's likely that your teachers are required to be accommodating, and once you know you can call them on it.

Also, I highly recommend taking advantage of the free counseling available at school. Though you might not think you need it, having someone to talk to about it helps, and if you're going to see them they can also help by siding with you against your prof.

It's the one thing that makes school so difficult. Even if you were in the hospital, most teacher's would expect you to catch up on your own or else repeat the class. It makes school so frustrating because you MUST be there for class and you MUST do all assignments and tests on time. Very little allowances are given, only the nice teachers give in... a little bit.

My only understanding of this is one, teachers have heard every clever excuse in the book and have seen every possible way of getting around it. Two, if you can handle dealing with school in hard times than you must be able to handle any profession there after.

Sorry for your loss Court. But do go see the Counselors, they may be able to advocate for you when dealing with the un-understanding teachers. Wish you the best.

^Finals and exams can be excused with proper medical documentation and reasons. An average of all the course work leading up to it is taken for the final grade in the class.

To some extent, teachers treat their students based on their academic history/performance and their personal relationship to them. As unfair as it may sound, you may be in a better position to get an extension/deferral from your professor (rather than through the department) if you have a good relationship with him/her or if your past grades suggest that your grades would significantly benefit from an extension.

If the "human" approach (speaking to your prof personally) doesn't work, you may have to conform to the rules of the bureaucracy. Find out what your department's policies are on extensions, or if necessary, temporary leave, and do what you have to do to get what you need done. Depending on your school you may have to go see your school's counselling department/advisor and get medical notes.

Considering your circumstances, I don't think it will be hard for you to get approval for *something* from a faculty advisor.
