i was talking to some R&D dude at work and they're talking about a new HD streaming capability that is ... get this , 80Mbps

not 8, 80, i think they're gonna call it GPOX or some shit

it's for when HDTV streaming on demand makes its way to the common consumer , so we'll all be laughing 5 years from now (or hopefully less) when this shit gets implemented

imma google novus now, thanks for the info

Anybody have a clue what kinda bandwidth nitro gives? We've been thinking about upgrading from extreme and I was wondering what kind of experience people have with it...

15-22M Down
500-900K Up.

When it was first applied It was averaging 5-12Mbps Down all day and sometimes lower at peak hours. I had to call in 5 times to get them to check it out. So they changed my buildings security camera channel as they said maybe it was causing interference. They also said something like "oh it's like that for some people or it takes months to warm up." It started averaging higher finally and downloads were noticeably faster for a while but then that came to a halt, literally. So i downgraded as it wasn't really beneficial for me.

Also rawb i got a gaming question. Any tips on getting my ping ms down? I have this old linksys WRT56G(??) with powerboost i've been using for about 5 years. Will a direct Ethernet connection to my xbox or a new wifi router, plus any other networking tweaks make a difference? Or should i not bother.

Latency on a wired connection is always lower wireless connections resulting is lower pings and faster performance. Make sure you have UPnP enabled on your router as well.

Having said that, I haven't played with much 802.11n gear, so I can't say for sure that the latency on a wired connection would be lower than a wireless 802.11n connection.

wired is always lower latency.

i xbox/game with a wireless router (802.11n/b/g in tri mode) because that extra few ms arent an issue and my main computers are all laptops. the biggest thing with wireless connections + latency is finding a frequency that isn't assraped to hell, which can be hard in apt buildings. you could be sharing spectrum with your neighbours wireless as well as their cordless phones.

Yeh i've had troubles with the frequency before and i switched it around because i was getting dropped connections all day long. This was when there was only 1 other wifi point near me. Now my list regularly shows 6-12 access points lol. I'll probably run a direct connection though, i need every .ms i can get for COD4 hardcore mode.
