Your iPod could get you arrested at the border...
Copyright deal could toughen rules governing info on iPods, computers
Vito Pilieci , Canwest News Service Published: Monday, May 26, 2008 OTTAWA - The federal government is secretly negotiating an agreement to revamp international copyright laws which could make the information on Canadian iPods, laptop computers or other personal electronic devices illegal and greatly increase the difficulty of travelling with such devices. The deal could also impose strict regulations on Internet service providers, forcing those companies to hand over customer information without a court order. Called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), the new plan would see Canada join other countries, including the United States and members of the European Union, to form an international coalition against copyright infringement. edit: man are u reading some of this shit? It's a NAFTA like trade deal that could go over the courts and even let border guards search your electronic devices "ex parte" or without a lawyer. ISP's would have to give up our personal information Last edited by decypher; May 27, 08 at 12:26 PM. |

I know it'll have a hard time passing much like the other bill. I just get all uppity every time they try to pull this bs by minimizing the public role in policy decisions. It's been a constant battle so people have to keep their eyes open.

Tories eye $500 fine for illegal downloads
David George-Cosh, National Post Published: Monday, June 02, 2008 The federal Conservatives are set to introduce new copyright legislation as soon as this week (apparently tomorrow Wednesday June 3rd, according to other news sources) that will include provisions to target users with a $500 fine for all illegal files transferred online, a move that legal experts say could see Canadians sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars if found guilty of infringement. Multiple sources familiar with the matter have told the National Post that one of the provisions in the government's updated Copyright Act of Canada will include a fine for each "personal use download" found to be shared online through peer-to-peer software programs. Other provisions in the bill, which is said to be tabled to the House of Commons tomorrow afternoon, will include measures to make it illegal to unlock cellphones or copy music from protected CDs to iPods as well as making it illegal to copy "time shifted" shows onto personal video recorders if flagged by broadcasters. The current Copyright Act charges a maximum $20,000 fine for each infringed material, but experts say the act was designed primarily for commercial cases and not to accommodate how digital copyrighted files are handled by individuals. The push to update the Copyright Act to reflect the current digital climate has been an eventful -- yet slow -- campaign. It has not been amended since 1997 although prior attempts to draw it in line following the ratification of the 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization Performances and Phonograms Treaty have failed. Another attempt by the Conservative government to introduce updated copyright legislation this past December failed following an outpouring of protest by grassroots organizations across Canada over fears the bill would fall in line with harsh U.S. copyright laws. wow. they dont even want us ripping completely legal and purchased music onto a personal music device. thats fucking terrible. if this shit flies, the only thing i can see happening is people completely stop buying cds altogether and only purchase music online. i really doubt this will fly at all. and im disapointed in the cons for trying to pull this shit. im pulling my vote from these dumbasses. only reason i gave them my vote last time anyways was to hope they would pull the completely useless billion dollar per year gun registration laws that ~still~ dont work right. |
