I generally trust Gwynne Dyer
Also, afaik Georgia hasn't denied that they started the conflict. All they've done is try to draw attention away from what began it and focusing instead on publicizing Russia's (over)reaction, which has been garnering the reaction from the west. Basically, Georgia attacked while Putin was in Beijing hoping that the Olympics would provide sufficient distraction to keep Russia from bearing down their brunt force. They were wrong. |

oops linked wrong story, there was another one from yesterday where they pulled out of NATO exercises in the baltic sea or some shit.

This entire situation has little to do with Georgia, Georgia is just a pawn whose gov't acted exactly as Russia had expected and wanted them to. The Russian's call it reflexive control. With that said, I don't think anyone is denying that Georgia acted carelessly, but it's a little late for all of that. They are sending a message to the West, it's all political positioning. Did the cold war end or did the US just have the upper hand for a while? Russia's just showing everyone the family jewels, and how big and shiny they can be. |

Gwynne Dyer knows what's up. It's going to be interesting to keep an eye on the Eastern Bloc now. You can already see Poland, Czech Republic and other former Warsaw Pact nations getting nervous in the service from the Russians flexing a bit of muscle. Also Russia announced that it was considering re-arming it's Baltic Fleet with nuclear weapons and re-assessing a military presence in Cuba. So while the Russians did come to the aid of the South Ossetians, it's also giving them a chance to show that they're serious and works towards what looks like an agenda of Russia trying to work their way into being an international player in regime change like the US currently is. |

What I mean to say is all of these satelite countries are pawns of either the usa or of russia, depending; and the rules and media coverage bend to reflect those alliances. That's why Georgia's attack on s.ossetia is considered legitamate while serbia's attack on kosovo a war crime. Interesting still, that the US can move in the amount of "humanitarian aid" including naval forces only a day after the shooting had stopped.
It's bigger then Georgia, it's world domination lol |

I doubt Poland would be attacked because of their NATO membership. The Europeans and NATO can breath easy that they don't have to come to the aid of Georgia. Russia is sending a message to the west which has slowly added Russia's former backyard to NATO and the EU. Now that Poland has signed the missile deal, Russia needs to make it's move too. Russia was too weak before to fight back but now it controls large amounts of gas and oil reserves and is much more prepared to use military action to protect their interests.
Definitely not a new Cold War. It's a much far reaching geopolitical game. You have the Europeans and the Americans on one side and the Russians fighting in the same region to bring each state (Poland, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova etc) into their sphere of influence. There's also much ethnic tension and fundamentalism in the region. Georgia's incursion into Ossetia supports Russia's claim against the independence of Kosovo and shows NATO that taking Georgia or Ukraine into NATO only serves to destabilize the entire organization and draw them into the conflict. They want to stop the EU and NATO from controlling the entire region. Oil is up too as EU depends on Russia for 25% of it's oil so you can bet that's a larger threat for now. Russia said that NATO needs them more then they need NATO. Places such as Afghanistan where the Russians support NATO forces etc. Ukraine has more to worry about than Poland for sure. They are not in NATO and the weak response to Georgia has them increasing their defense spending. |

why is it whenever Russia decides to roll over in bed are people so quick to throw the term 'cold war' around?
let me get this straight. Georgia invades South Osettia and Russia reacts = OMG COLD WAR but say if Iraq invades Kuwait and the USA reacts = GO USA! the truth is, this sort of shit happens a lot in the world and it makes me sick to see the term 'Cold War' thrown around just because it happens to be the Russians doing it and not the United States. Maybe it's just me but I'd like to think the world has changed an eensy little bit since it happened. I don't think a lot of us throwing out the term really have an idea of what it was like to be living in the world during the 1960s and 70s when a lot of the conflicts reached their pique. The term 'Eastern Bloc' is also horribly outdated and hasn't been widely used since 1989. |

The term 'cold war' is used because of two things, the struggle for control of 'satelite states' and second because of the very real threat of a world wide arms race. With the US equiping Georgia, Poland, Isreal, saudi arabia ect, you might expect Russia to supply Syria, Iran ect. Conflicts in regions around the world, especially in the middle east, could see increased tensions if this were to happen.
