New Radio Station in Vancouver - 100.5 The Peak
Just in case you haven't heard, there's a new Radio Station in Vancouver:
The Peak.FM - The Peak.FM - Something Big Has Come To Vancouver The Peak 100.5. It's a new rock station concentrating on Canadian Talent, and indieish rock. Sample artists: The Kooks, Coldplay, City and Color, Jason Mraz, Tokyo Police Club, Radiohead, Palo Nutini, Broken Social Scene, Vampire Weekend... Hopefully this can find a niche in Vancouver. The Fox has been sitting in the same area on the Ratings for a while, but not high enough to split the ratings. But since in my opinion the music selection on the fox is probably the worst in the city, this station could blow them away like XFM did. Last edited by NinjaBoy; Nov 14, 08 at 01:44 PM. |

anyone remember G-house? I wish there was a station with 2 hours dedicated to electronic music. And i don't mean stuff like the essential mix or radio tunes remixed over house beats.
It'd be nice to see a station that showcases local dj talent or international talent passing through the city. |

Kinda bugs me how everybody keeps complaining that there's no equivalent to G-spot anymore. There's no equivalent because a) the tastes of dance culture aren't so specific anymore and b) the demand for it isn't the same.
I know it's a bit of a chicken-egg argument but really the scene it represented dissipated and really doesn't exist anymore in this city. It's not that G-spot held it together, it's just that they were one of the first groups to leave when the going got tough (read: raves ceased to be, by and large, profitable). There's plenty of people willing to fill the void but the sad truth is there just isn't the demand for it anymore in this city. But the stuff is always still happening, same as it was ages before raving became cool or the g-spot was airing. |

^Iduno, I think peoples opinion of "dance, electronic, or techno", whatever you want to call it, is like you said very dependable on the person. However I think its more out there than it ever was before. Although genre's like trance, Breaks, and DnB are close to obsolete, House and Electro have taken this city by storm. Take for example the mainstream Granville Strip, more and more nights are opening up with DJ's playing house and electro as appose to top 40 and hip hop. Yes ill admit they're usually requesting house with "more lyrics", but I would still consider it a progression on the electronic scene. Heck almost half my gigs as a house dj are at clubs on grandvile and davie now.
Not to mention when this city easily gets 1-3 big international DJ's a week, thats a huge improvement compared to 8 years ago when the rave scene was at its peak. I also think the fact that the beat has been playing tracks by kaskade/deadmou5 and max graham, and Eric Prydz is a big jump from playing the more "top 40" electronic tunes by Daft Punk or Fatboy slim. I hear teenagers and young adults playing all kinds of "underground" electronic tracks, from electro-trance, and many of them are clueless about the DJ's who produce them or where to find them. In fact they're still calling it all "techno music". So the desire for IS out there, they just dont know how to find it. Im not sure what the rules are with radio and not 100% why the G-post ended, in some ways it seems like they were battling with the radio station. But never the less I dont think many people really even listen to the radio since mp3s? For crying out loud, when I was young I was still using a TAPE to record off the g-spot. Now kids can send each other files and dl them illegaly... why sit and make time to listen to a radio? Do ipods even have a radio feature? Last edited by R Wellbelove; Nov 15, 08 at 04:11 AM. |
