I'm sorry, I need to leave this thread because I don't have the patience for such high levels of ignorance and self righteousness.

^thank you.
Not to mention when you hit the gym and actually add muscle mass, every pound of muscle you gain will burn upwards of 60 calories a day. Simply gaining 10 pounds of muscle mass which over a few months isn't that hard, you'll be burning an additional 4200 calories a week. Run on the treadmill an hour a day 4x a week and you'll probably lose a minimum of another 3000 calories a week. After a few months your routine will be losing you ~2 pounds a week. |

Winter 06-07 I took on a 2nd job to save up some money. I worked from 8 am to 2AM mondays, 8am to 10 pm tues-fri and about 10 hours a day both saturday and sunday. I was working over 90 hours a week, and yet I still managed to wake my ass up 3-4 times a week before work and do a work out. Laziness/poor time management are not legitimate excuses. |

My two cents:
For the 1% (estimated by the medical community) of obese people who can attribute their obesity for a medical reason, the causes are usually 1) hypothyroidism 2) cushings disease 3)depression. The rest of the 1% are probably on a medication that's messed up their metabolism and/or causes them to overeat. Do I think these people should be able to fly like the rest of us? Yes. And since pretty much all obese people eventually become depressed, I guess they'd fall under at least one of the aforementioned categories. |

I love my mom but she was ruining my life. Many children are in the same situation, without a parent to step in. If parents knew their kids could be taken away from them unless they shaped up, they'd make an effort to feed them properly. |

Learn to cook. Buy tomato soup in bulk from superstore, less than a dollar a can. Buy a bag of frozen chicken breasts from superstore, and a box of no name whole wheat pasta. Buy some potatoes and whatever other vegetables you want. Make a soup, freeze it in containers. I made a big batch every sunday night when I was working 2 jobs, 7 days of lunches cost me something like 15 bucks and an hour of cooking time.
Buying cheap garbage that's pre made is cheaper than buying healthy pre made food. Stop being lazy and make it yourself. |

Doesn't that seem hypocritical? |

I wanted to move to live with my dad for a long time, and I had a strong desire to get healthy, however my only food options day after day was junk(rotation between order pizza, order chinese, fast food) Physical activity kept me in shape somewhat until I snapped my shoulder in football and wasn't able to play for the entire season, and was still injured when indoor soccer season started, so the problem exploded.
Would I have changed my situation on my own, if moving with my dad wasn't an option? It's impossible to know. Hopefully I would have, but maybe not. I know when I left to my dad's I was extremely excited to change, and had wanted to for a long time. I hated being fat, I hted feeling sick after eating. That's how I felt when I was a teenager, and I'm confident others in similar situations feel the same way, which is why I believe the government should treat parents who feed their children toxic garbage similarly to how they would treat parents feeding their children illegal drugs. It is not even a question that our habits are formed through how we are taught as children and teenagers. However once we are on our own, taking care of ourselves, it becomes our responsibility to maintain our own lives. Just because one has been raised to not exercise and eat like garbage doesn't mean they can;t make a personal choice to change their situation, get a gym membership, and start eating properly. |

You know what I knew when I was that age?
How too cook. I had a job and cooked my own lunches. Would any mother be pissed if their son went out and bought healthy food. Hell me and my brother bought groceries and it made my mom ecstatic. You've stated time and time again, that obese people have no excuse. Unless it was you. |

Lazy or not, they're still human. That being said, there are a lot of productive people who are obese, yet still live meaningful lives, and if a fat person needs to take a plane ride somewhere, they should have the right to fly in comfort. Let them have their cake and try not to stare while they eat it too, k?!

BTW I did something about it, if I hadn't wanted to move with my dad it wouldn't have happened, seeing as how my mom had 100% guardianship and was very against me moving. It took a lot of convincing on both mine and my dad's part to let it happen, and my dad had to agree to continue paying child support for me, even though I was living with him. Also at 14(I moved to my dad's about a month after my 15th birthday) my mom didn't want me to have a job because it would interfere with school. A year before that it would have been illegal for me to work. In fact, even living with my dad it was a rule I worked all summer long, but wasn't allowed to work during the school year until after grade 12 football season ended. |

Also, Ninjaboy I've stated that Obese adults have to be held accountable for their own choices. They chose to continue living a certain way. It's unfortunate that they may(or may not..) have been raised to think a lifestyle like that is acceptable, and that's why repeatedly I have stated that I think raising a child to eat like garbage and not stay fit should be considered the same as raising a child to think drug abuse is the norm. Society is shooting itself in the foot by being too 'politically correct' to point out that raising a child to be obese is basically condemning them to a poorer quality of life. If lack of education and understand is the problem, then something needs to be done in that regard.
Obesity is an epedemic. Our generation is projected to be the first generation where the average life expectancy is lower than the previous. That's appalling. |
