Deep Cove man takes on 2010 bylaw
Activist says new rule violates charter Jane Seyd, North Shore News Published: Sunday, October 11, 2009 NORTH Vancouver resident and Olympic critic Chris Shaw launched a lawsuit Wednesday against the City of Vancouver, claiming a bylaw that restricts his ability to protest the games in large sections of downtown violates his charter rights. Shaw, a Deep Cove resident and the author of Five-Ring Circus: Myths and Realities of the Olympic Games, filed the lawsuit Wednesday along with fellow Olympic protester Alissa Westergard-Thorpe with the help of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. In the lawsuit, Shaw said he wants to be able to protest the Olympics and voice his opinion with T-shirts and buttons, to hand out leaflets and carry protest signs within the areas Vancouver has deemed off-limits. In the bylaw, the city states nobody can carry a sign except a "celebratory sign" or hand out leaflets -- unless they have a permit -- on many downtown streets and parks during the Olympics. Shaw said he launched the lawsuit because the bylaw makes it "virtually impossible to express dissent" in many public areas of downtown during the Olympics, contrary to the right to free expression guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The charter "allows me to express dissenting views and to express them pretty much every place I want to in this country," he said. "The city can't trade those rights away because they have a marketing agreement with a foreign entity. (The charter) is not a disposable piece of paper when it's not convenient for different levels of government." Shaw said so far there's been too much passive acceptance of civil liberties being curtailed by the Olympics. "The Olympics is going to bring us a very significant legacy in the legal sense," he said. "This is a test case." While the lawsuit only concerns the bylaw passed by the City of Vancouver, Shaw said its outcome will affect any similar bylaws being considered by other municipalities as well as the Olympic organizing committee's desire to keep protests away from the torch relay route. Shaw added he's hopeful the case will actually be heard by a judge before the Olympics and that his argument will be successful. If it is, he expects to see Olympic protests possibly spring up in several areas, including the North Shore. This week, the provincial government also introduced a new law that would give Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond greater powers to swiftly remove graffiti and signs that violate local bylaws during the 2010 Olympics. source: Deep Cove man takes on 2010 bylaw |

I'm not looking forward to it, my children. My office is located next to the library and I have been told that will be the hub of all the Olympic security. Thinking of booking 2 of my precious vacation weeks, what a waste! Vacation time just to sit at home and/or wander around while all the craziness takes place?! No thank-you my children!

Have they passed the "bust into your house and tear down your
unauthorized signage" Bylaw yet. What really nice is that they bill you for the break in and then consider charges against you.. Maybe they'll sentence you to being one of the Olympic Volunteers. (after your reeducation) |

So here's a fucked up story... I manage a liquor store near Hastings+Renfrew and from what I have heard some of the local businesses are pissed. There are Asian grocers all going West on Hastings going past Nanaimo that are being forced to reno their store fronts, from getting cleaner, newer awnings and re-painting their street side produce racks.
Bull shit, right? It gets even better... The Source Adult near Renfrew is (technically) kitty corner to the PNE fairgrounds that will be some sort of Olympic villa... Source Adult sells all sorts intresting stuff like dildo's, lubes, vibrating vaginas, kinky outfits, you name it. Now the Olympic commitee is saying that they're too close to one of its sites. Their products, being somewhat offensive for the world to see... They're being forced to reduce their operation to only being able to RENT movies. FUCKING CRAZY NAZI GERMANY BATMAN. They have since gave up their lease and are now relocating. Fuck the Olympics! We still have the internet. Those European New World Order fucks can't have this. The bylaws suck and are unfair, but what I've seen from the anti olympic protesters, I can't blame the government for having a knee jerk reaction.
Yes, some protesters may have valid points, and ways of expressing them, but sadly I think most will be like Stephen_C. He and apparently a large group of people think that political protests are simply an excuse to show your ass to people. |

I wonder what the Olympics would be like if they just let everyone do what they wanted.
I understand that all the bigtime corporate sponsors want to be guaranteed 100% brand coverage and all but like.. fuck that? I'd prefer a lower key Olympics with free speech than trying to squeeze every last drop of money out of sponsors by bending over backwards to serve them. |
