You are never too old to be a DJ
DJ Granny, 69, taking French dance scene by storm - News, Music & Gigs - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk
By Gary Fennelly Friday, 5 March 2010 DJ Ruth Flowers, a 69-year-old British grandmother, is conquering the Parisian party scene. Clad in a leopard-skin shrug and sunglasses, the British granny is playing trendy nightclubs in the French capital and is booked for the Cannes Film Festival. DJ Flowers, from Bristol, began playing at 65, after stumbling upon her grandson’s birthday party. "It started really when my grandson had a birthday party. He was quite young and they always have a little disco," she said. "After the party, I went along quite late and the gentlemen on the door said 'I don't think you want to go in there madam'. "I said, 'well I rather think I do, because it's my grandson's birthday.' And I went in, and the noise, it was very noisy, the lights were flashing, but there was an awful lot of energy and real enjoyment of the music and the dancing so I thought, 'I like this.' "I love to see the kids enjoy themselves. So I thought, 'I could do that, I could do that for the kids', you know?" Flowers, a trained singer, said it took her four years to learn to use the machines. French producer Aurelien Simon, who taught her how to spin, said: "I explained the basics of electro music, and then she created her own style." Flowers' sets mix techno and dance peppered with rock by the likes of Queen and the Rolling Stones. She is currently working on her first single and has no plans to retire. bbc vid: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8550942.stm Last edited by stephen_c; Mar 05, 10 at 11:30 AM. Do the math, folks!
This woman was in her 20's during the wild days of the '60s in the UK, when most everything was turned upside down (sex, drugs, rock, fashion, politics, etc...) To see this woman grasping upon a new energy, w/ her kind of history is not surprising in the least! When most people her age are still fumbling w/ the remote on their dvd players, it's impressive she's embraced the technology to play out. BIG UP, a Granny!!! All the power to her! Frosty (would hit her gig) |

She's not the first granny ive seen rockin it out to electronic music. She genuinely seems to really enjoy what shes doing, props to her!
She obviously has a team and hooks up with the right people who gave her the the image. Otherwise, what else has she got to loose? Its a great time to get into something like that, unlike most DJs who complain they never have enough unless they make a full time job out of it. But Frosty makes a good point, the "old" people of today are from a different generation. A fine example would be my retired dad who does nothing but play online video games all day.
