The Professors argument is utter tripe and no better than the arguments he is countering. I thought the point of Earth Hour was to bring awareness to consumption rather then actually saving the planet by turning your power off or suggesting we go back to some primitivist Zerzan circle jerk.
One example of his weak strawman argument: "Giving women the freedom to work outside the home depended on the availability of electrical appliances that free up time from domestic chores." What a crock of shit. Is he suggesting that women all of a sudden woke up and were like "wow the dishes are done already, time for me to get at those civil liberties I keep putting off." His viewpoint is quite insulting. Directly linking technology as a single determining factor is weak. It's the same sort of Glen Beck rhetoric. No wonder, one google of Ross Mckitrick = Fraser Institute, Against Climate Change etc etc. Glad I wasted my time reading his BS argument. He needs to be on Beck's show jumping around like a clown telling people that progress is the cancer of society and using lose connections to prove some point for the sake of being against the grain. If one thing Conservatives have going for them is the ability to turn ideology upside down and lure people in to believe in a worldview that is counter to their own well being. Pure tripe. That us why Ross here likes to frame Earth Hour as some sort of liberal restraint on personal liberty. Classic rhetoric. Last edited by decypher; Mar 26, 10 at 10:45 PM. |

^I think you're giving the professor far too much credit.
When I was reading the article, the only impression I got was, "Poor bastard." Dude TOTALLY missed the point of earth hour. He's far too shallow/base/literal. You know: right-wing. As well-worded his argument/opinion/reasoning was, it's negated because of his misunderstood stance/approach. Meh Just another blow-hard to point at and laugh. Frosty (will be burning candles like the rest of the year) |
