Ideas...
Hey...
just wondering if i can get a few ideas on these topics, relating to language and the role it plays in life and thought. on a more philosophical level, i guess... 1. To what extent do the labels and names we use in the pursuit of knowledge affect the conclusions we reach? 2. Are truths obscured by the language in which we express them? 3. "if we spoke a different language, we would perieve a somewhat different world. Ludwig Wittgenstein said this. to what extent do you agree or disagree? i have a few of my own ideas on these, but any general feedback would be appreciated. -anya |

No you don't want ideas, those are to the point questions... What your calling "ideas" would be the answer..... Now if you just said that you were stuck on these questions and you needed some help........most likely noone would help you anyways, but at least you would be honest eh? hehe :)

Lildonkey, i don't really think any of these have an 'answer' or whatever. and the fact that they were 'to the point' questions was meant to start up a discussion. i could just say 'how does language affect our perception?' or something, but isn't that a little too general?
Senior, i am wondering what you mean by nothing is personal? on your second point, i agree that language is a major issue, which affects our perception of the world. i also speak Russian, and it gets complicated because there are two ways of adressing people, depending on the level of respect and formailty you want to show that person. i read that there are many more such variations in the Japanese language, and others. i wonder how such formalitites affect our internal growth, and whether we grow up always having some kind of barrier to our thoughts, and how having to distinguish in what way you will address someone impacts you? .... bah, it's complicated, i'm not too good at explaining myself with words, i guess... |

language has such a strong connection to the cultures they are present in, as does the location the language is spoken in. Dialects or accents for example.
labels and names dont play such a strong part in the conclusions we make, more so the way these words are brought upon us, whether it be in a negitive conitation or a positive one. the opinion of the source plays the biggest part in the way you form your own opinion. (which is why research is necessary to form an educated opinion) 2. To a certain degree, language can be a barrier when we express emotion or feelings... 'truths' persay but truth really is a subjective thing... 3. Of course we would percieve the world differently, to what degree, again thats subjective. To me i feel handicapped in a way because i speak only english but it is probably my biggest asset. I hope to speak many languages as i grow up, languages are quite valuable and enable you to use your skills worldwide. If society as a whole spoke a different language it would tie in with my first point about culture and location, these things are so closely tied that the way we viewed the world would inevitably change. |
