any of the following by wes anderson:
bottle rocket, rushmore, the royal tenenbaums.

all are set in a mild time warp that play with the idea of actually being held in modern times. there's usually a family 'crisis' (for lack of a better word) that is involved in the plot. they're all so funny, but involve a very witty, uncharacteristically weird audience to be truely appreciated.

bottlerocket is the least best movie, his first film.
rushmore, is pretty good.
royal tenanbums, takes cake.

Donnie Darko, Run Lola Run, Vanilla Sky and Office Space are all really good movies to rent.

I would also recommend "Gia" with Angelina Jolie

i love those 2 too. bottle rocket is a really rad film, just to see where they started off from, the humour, the script, the characters. also, a lot of the same actors are in bottle rocket. imo, it was kind of boring and it would have made as a better short than film.
